My Windows firewall is not activated, I'm using the Mc Afee firewall.
Trash any firewall and instead stop your box opening ports to the internet.
If there is no open port to the outside world, then no malware can contact you. It is a little bit safer compared to a possible buggy additional program which can be hacked from the outside.

Well, fingers crossed, after downloading and installing the new 5.2.2 client, everything seems to be back to normal...whatever that is.

Certainly looks a lot better than when you had 1600 results. I've been upgrading machines to 5.2.2 and haven't run into any problems yet. It looks like a nice piece of work so far. It should certainly solve any future ghosts problems for you.
