Unfortunately you don't get an accurate current reading this way because the current waveform is not a sinewave, also the current and voltage waveforms are not in phase because the PSU is not a purely resistive load.

This probably why Landroval's UPS is reporting wrongly, [edit] the accurate quoted output of UPS devices is the VA reading not the power reading [/edit].

Andy

The solution would be a dedicated measurement device, which takes the phase difference (cos phi) into account and is capable to display not only the measured "VA" value, but also calculated "W" and "var", like the "Haushalts Energiemonitor" EM 800 from ELV and similar.

[edit-:](The site is in German language, simply enter "EM 800" into the search box down left and press "Suchen". I have similar model, could not tell now about CRT, but on my notebook the display light consumes approx. 8 Watt :-)[:-edit]

These measurement devices are pretty cheap now and I could imagine that similar could be available in different countries too.

The waveform coming from a wall socket is indeed a sine wave, as that's what AC is all about. That is, unless you have incredibly dirty power... ;)

The voltage waveform is a sine wave but current can only be drawn when the appled voltage is greater than the voltage on the smoothing capacitor in the psu.

David Lloyd? You're an Accrington lad? If you are a contemporary of David Lloyd you will be a little older than me, but not much; ~5 or 6 years perhaps. It's good to see someone else posting here who enjoys the subtlties of life, like cricket ;-).

Anyway, this is going to be incomprehensible to anyone in the Americas, Continental Europe and East Asia and if we keep going like this we are going to get sat on by a Mod for going totally off topic ;-)). I'll see you around the boards.

How do I calculate how much power my computer is consuming? I have heard many things from many people, some make sense, and some don't, can somebody tell me the truth? From what I understand there is ineffeciency in the power supply? I have been told because I have a 480w ps, then I am consuming 480w? that seems pretty bogus to me. PLEASE HELP!!!

I've got this PSU so I can see how much the unit is "sweating and at moment with CPY running at 100% (P4 3.4ghz) it shows ±250Watts (that is without my monitor and mouse (both got there own supply))

I just took a look at that PSU and I like it but it don't show a price???? must be free! Right???

If you can find a "buy it now" link on that page then perhaps it is. But the only link I see thats close is the "where to buy" one at the top.
