Yes all that advice is

Yes all that advice is correct and usually the problem.

In my case I was just looking for a free program (which Paul showed me) to run the temps while running wu's

Yes mine is a dual core.

Funny thing is I ran into other odd problems.

It had a updated cooler compared to the one I got in a package when I put this one together about 4 years ago but since it had a fan that was not "removable" I just broke the thing off the sink and then took another fan that was previously the exhaust fan for the box and glued it to the sink and the temp went down to the 80's and ran as fast as it should.

But the next thing and what most likely was the reason was after shutting down and turning the power supply off I tried to turn it back on and boot and nothing happened.

Well once again this machine had a power supply failure (2nd time) and I used fancy Ultra X3 800watt units yet they died twice in less than one year now.

So to make sure I just took an old 300 watt PS that I have had in my stash for over 7 years and it started right back up.

Of course it was not a PS made for the modern SATA so I had to make my own connection to power up the HD.

I also had to do a clean install of XP pro in a new HD I had in my stash which I switched to in this pc.

I have too many projects at home so I actually need to find the driver for the modem card since it doesn't recognise so it will get back online to reload some wu's again.

As I was doing all of this I got in that mood.....and ordered a new triple core 2.8 to sit next to another one just like it that I picked up a few months ago.

It does about 12 wu's per day and for the price they made it easier than building a new one....or two.

So I will get the new one up friday if it arrives and then get the other one back online to join my pc room (which my wife wonders why I have all of these things taking up all of the room upstairs)

Ok it's almost 4:30am and I have been outside watching the Perseid shower so I better go fake some sleep.

Goodnight

I had another great night out

I had another great night out watching the sky Tullio!

Clear sky and 60 degrees and I sat out from 1am until almost 5am

Saw lots of meteors and a couple bright ones.

Watched 7 orbital satellites crossing the sky and for the first time in all my years saw 3 of those satellites cross each other from different directions all at once....at almost 23,000 miles up.

And just about 4:30am as I was watching Orion rise above the horizon I see a bright light in the opposite direction so I turn to see the ISS and watched it cross the sky until it was out of site as it went by Orion's head.

And all night in the southern sky Jupiter was the brightest object in my night sky.

Oh and my new triple core showed up today and I just set it all up and D/L Boinc and it is now running it's first 3 Einstein WU's

Tonight will be another nice clear night here too.

Well my new D-link pci card

Well my new D-link pci card showed up today and now my old beast is back up and running after a quick install and then Boinc and a looooong time downloading all the data just for the 64 new WU's

Put the box in a colder room w/o a dsl connection so when it gets them finished I will have to bring it back in this room to upload and get more.

Speedfan says the processor temp is 91C right now so it is running ok but of course it could be a few degrees cooler.

Funny watching the temp drop way down if I turn Boinc off though.

The 2 new triple-core AMD Phenom II X3 720's are running nicely.

This one has done 60 Global WU's since the Aug. 13th

And the other has done 103 WU's since May 15th

Ok back to it..........

I ran one at 3.02GHz (not

I ran one at 3.02GHz (not 3.20) from roughly 2005-07 and I do not remember any speed issues. I had two older machines online at the same time with all doing seti and its results were in proportion to the clock speed +/- gremlin overhead.

Check your BIOS and see if you have a setting to throttle the cpu if it gets over a certain temp, if so either raise that temp or just turn that setting off. And MAKE SURE you keep an eye on those temps no matter what you do!!

91 C. Deg. is just too

Message 98814 in response to message 98811

91 C. Deg. is just too high.

You should check the thermal-interface for proper contact.

You should clean the CPU snorkel-inlet panty-hose dust-screen (vacume cleaner w/CPU unit powered-off, eh?)

If you don't have the aforementioned CPU-intake snorkel, panty-hose mess dust-screen (or case intake orfice screen), you should consider sending me your unit (free of charge) and just buying a unit that works for you.

If you haven't a CPU snorkel-inlet OR any sort of intake-orfice screen, then you'll have to take apart your CPU/HSF combo and blow out the crap encrusted in the HSF.

You want: 60 Deg. C. @ full throttle

If your machine is a laptop: your ACPT table is probably not optimum. IF your machine is a laptop, then stay away from WU's that take more than 4-8 housr to crunch. Although you can crunch intense eomputational WU's, e.g., SETI, on your lap-top, its not recommended unless you dig into the particulars bout your machine.

You could always just get a long cable and only connect it when you need to or even better get a cheap wireless USB adapter for less than 20 bucks. Here is an example http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156152

Thanks Paul.....speedfan works great!

So it tells me that

Remote temp. 42C
Internal temp. 55C
CPU temp. 97C ......ok that sounds a bit warm.

Maybe I will shut it down for a couple minutes and take a closer look at the heat sink when the fan isn't spinning.

Seems odd that this one is hot and the others aren't since this one is in the coolest part of the room.

I find the cpu temperature somewhat hard to believe - is the software reading the sensors right? I was under the impression cpu's have nowadays some kind of a safety circuit which should shut them down when they reach 90C or such. At nearly 100C it's a miracle the cpu wasn't fried up already.

Before shutting down, thermal throttling will first slow the CPU down, and this seems to be exactly what the original poster observed. I really think this is not software but bardware related: either the temp sensor is wrong or (more likely) the "thermal interface" between heat sink and chip is not ok.
