I realize that the post

Message 60935 in response to message 60934

I realize that the post linked is now a 'sticky thread' so as to filter off at least some of the traffic from frustrated folks and I appreciate that. I also realize that the person who posted that *can't* update the home page. That lament on my part (and others of course) is NOT directed to the nice person who posted and then marked the post a sticky thread.

But what I'm beginning to see is a bit of 'push back' from folks here toward those airing out frustrations, *as if the folks who can't get data transfers to succeed and frankly do NOT get fully accurate information from the messages part of BOINC are 'bad actors'. They are not. Pushing back at them is a form of displaced aggression/frustration. I can understand it, even if I view it as inappropriate.

I'm not 'targeting' the folks with limited admin rights here as bad actors -- they are doing what they can to 'tamp down' the frustrations voiced by others even less in the know. (In some cases they are doing that by deleting messages which are viewed as incendiary). I just wish their job was made easier by someone with appropriate rights updating the home page as frankly they should.

Oh, and regarding that 'not fully accurate' information I referred to above -- when uploading results over the past week or so I have gotten a 'project down' report. OK so a major problem. Uploading the result within 1 minute works. If the project was actually down, or the data base was actually shut down, it would take more than the 1 minute to resolve. My own *guess* (in the absence of ANY real information) is that there is a constraint regarding the number of open connections supported -- one which may have been reduced to 'help out' the data base loading issues. That is a different issue, but one which the BOINC software doesn't report clearly (ie we don't see 'too many open connections, upload refused').

Again, I'm not in a shoot the messenger mode here -- but I'd LOVE to see a message from the messenger, in addition to the steps removed helper folks who are in fact doing their best.

As I've noted elsewhere, it's not as big a deal for me, I've set my clients to 'no new work' and as they clear their backlog for Einstein, I set them to suspend, and let other projects which currently are much more stable pick up the slack. Einstein has had a very good and extended project run of high reliability. That ended in mid December. Hopefully sometime within the coming months it will return to high reliability standards. When that happens, I'll add it back to my most active projects list. In the interim, the other projects I participate will gladly pick up the CPU cycles.

Barry,

the post I linked to above "Possible Answers to some of your Questions" is a sticky thread on top of the "Problems and Bug Reports" section of the forum. It should not be too demanding to read at least these top posts. BTW: If you read that post you knew why they don't post on the homepage.

Anderl, Gildardo and others,

please search or browse the forum before you post!

One of the moderators posted this: Possible Answers to some of your Questions

By the way, I DID NOT START THIS OR ANY OTHER THREAD REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. I simply added my reply to existing threads, meaning I DID SEARCH the forum. Maybe I should have searched harder, but I don't have the time to go through myriads of threads until I find the answer I'm looking for.

I thank you for the link, but I don't think I deserve being chastised -- after all I AM VOLUNTEERING MY CPU CYCLES.

Ah Barry.....just so this is crystal clear.:-)

In my view users can complain as much as they like, but must be nice according to the rules of posting here. That applies to all posts in fact. I don't 'tamp down' otherwise.

A thread deletion to which I hope hasn't been mistaken as an example of 'push back' ( and please do correct my assumptions here! ) was in fact quite a blander decision - deleting pure vitriol no less.

A complainant ( via the red-x function ) quite correctly reported an entry which I won't repeat. The complainant voiced their own concerns:

Quote:
I think Germany is not on the dark side of the moon but one of the leading high tech and industrial countries, and the Hitler and Gestapo era is far over. This remark is offensive both for us German volunteers and the project leader if he\\'s really moving to Germany

One of the easier mod calls.... :-)

The remainder of the reported post did go on in other respects, and easily made it over the line on several other counts taken individually in any case. I actually toyed with the idea of leaving it in and using it as a benchmark example of how not to post. Basically you could reverse all the communication techniques shown, and wind up with a near perfect display of how to post acceptably! But like the nude 'streakers' at the cricket ( they like to be seen on telly ), it's probably best to cut the camera feed and move on.... :-)

So fire away all and sundry ... but say it politely!

I have no extra, special role outside moderating. I have a few more buttons on my browser page - to be used judiciously to enforce protocol as publicly defined - lest the sword of Damocles fall upon me! I'm not in the management circle of the project, nor do I desire to be. I view my status as perpetually provisional. Readers may note my careful prefacing of opinion, like 'Some of my thoughts..' and 'in my view' etc...

Again: if anyone doesn't like E@H then speak up and speak your mind, but watch the language! There is a little self-check list on the left when you open up the 'reply to this post' mode. Another trick is to read your own post as if you were the recipient, then if it doesn't feel right it probably isn't.... :-)

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...
