Since installing BOINC on my PC it continually locks up, and I need to reboot, on recovery I get a Graphics error and the report from Microsoft refers me to the Graphics vendor, I have updated the graphics drivers, but I still keep getting the error.

PC Lock-up

Peter,

this sounds like a general problem. Either you have a cooling problem (Australia, it's summer there) or you have a weak power supply. Do all the fans work? Is there sume dust in the CPU's cooler?

Maybe you can try www.memtest86.com. they provide a selfbooting program which stress-tests your memory, try it out and tell us if it failes or not.

There is a possible second problem. And this is the graphics and the builtin screensaver. I remember some problems regarding ATI, but since you did not tell us, if the box locks up immediate or just after some time of work, I am just guessing.

It's not heat.

My PC has locked up repeatedly and it *seems* to be in the Einstein application at the time. (I'm set up 50% SETI, 50% Einstein.) My graphics drivers are as current as they're gonna be - the machine is almost 4 years old and hasn't changed, and I just recently had to reinstall Windows XP and update everything to work right. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it's a graphics-related problem because the top edge of the screen is always grainy garbage when it happens. It was locking before the reinstall, and it locked twice in the last two days, causing my wife to be annoyed with me and causing me to disable Einstein on this system.

My other computer is only running SETI, and has never locked in this manner. I definitely mistrust the Einstein application.

It can still be heat then. Just not of your CPU, but of your videocard. Have you cleaned out the fan or heatsink on your videocard lately? Same so for the CPU?
