Well, I don't know, just because it has not been hacked does not prove that it can't be. Watching industry trends shows that many of the custom solutions are worse than the more popular generic versions.

As far as the question and answer forums, I don't understand what is so unique about the BOINC forums that make them more useful than other BBS ...

The BOINC BBS pulls information from the BOINC DB as do most of the web pages.

Single sign on is nice as well.

There is only one scheduler (in Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Your core client contacts the scheduler, and gets 'work'. But if you don't have the necessary files (application, data, whatever) on your machine, they get downloaded from a download server. These are now distributed, and in the coming days we'll add at least one more.
