Fan noise does not bother me ... and I can hear the hard drives most of the time also ... :)
The problem is that some of the older systems I have are using the "stock" CPU cooler ... so, the fans almost always are in "take-off" mode ... :)
Usually cannot hear the fans in the dual G5 so, I think I will be getting one of the dual dual-core PowerMacs as soon as I can ... I may get a couple of the small G4 mini-macs too ... since Apple is being stupid I may as well get a couple three of these higher speed systems while the getting is good.
I keep waiting for AMD to get more inventive with the internals of the CPU chips and I will be more interested in them ... but I have also consisdered getting a dual core AMD MB/CPU when Frys puts one on sale and I can buy one. I can drop that into my remaining single threaded P4 to make a dual processing system out of it ...
Anyway, we just borrowed $70K and we still have more than 35K to pay back, so, I will not be able to squeeze much into the buying cash flow for a month or two ... I still have to see how this bends my taxes ...
When Einstein released the Altivec-optimized Mac app, it cut 40% off the crunching time on my Mini (which is the 1.25GHz "low end" version). The alpha Team MacNN SETI apps do even better compared to the 'stock' SETI app, cutting times in half - or better. That little G4 has an incredible vector unit. Yes, my Athlon 64 3700+ is a little faster, but at twice the clock speed (and 1.5x the cost), it should be, and on Einstein it definitely isn't twice as fast...
No doubt. The weighted credit system of BOINC is great for slow G4s doing Einstein. I have to make sure I don't manually report the Einstein credits. Otherwise, my claimed credit (about 50% of other peers for the same WU) has a good chance of reducing the granted credit. Coming in fourth after the quorum has been defined is perfect.

Thank you very much for that consideration - I'm sure your partners on those WUs appreciate your forebearance. I absolutely cringe when I see a couple of Macs claiming 32-36 credits (or HT P4s or Xeons claiming 45) crunching alongside me. ;-0

I do what I can to please, Michael. But when it happens, it happens. My credit claims are either exactly the same as everyone else (plus or minus 10%) for some projects, and way, way off on others. Like this:
Now I know that this happens to be the fault of the CC not counting SETI crunching time and instead allocating it to Predictor or something else. Whichever WU gets the added crunching time will claim a very high incorrect credit (but valid result). It's the combo of the SETI app and the CC. It's happened since CC 4.45 and so I just have to suspend SETI again for a month until I get the nerve to try it again.
And I know that you Bill, my fellow Team MacAddict compadre, are running the MacNN optimized client. But doesn't that make matters worse on the whole screw-everyone-out-of-their-credits aspect? I'm all for getting WUs done faster, of course, and that would help in that respect. Actually, I like to run CC 5.x to get the benefit of the feature that re-estimates the time to completion based on history. I've had some major overcommitment panics that need manual fixing. It's all because of the multi-downloads of WUs like Rosetta, SETI, and Einstein that get cute and get 4 or 5 WUs at a time from the same master WU. Keep up the good crunching!

I only have one G4 Mini, my other Macs are G3's, or a G4 iBook not running optimized (yet)... but on that G4, I'm running the optimized BOINC Client (V4.72) as well as the optimized SETI app, to try to "even things up". My credit claims for SETI and Einstein therefore match pretty closely with everyone elses. Claims on SZTAKI and Predictor are only a slight bit high, but claims on Rosetta were so outrageous that I decided to detach from Rosetta on that box - they don't have any averaging, you get what you claim, and I felt like I was cheating...
