A new MacOS PPC App is available from our Beta Test page.

This App is part of a new generation of Apps that follow our attempts to track down and fix the remaining problems of the new software we're using since S5R2.

This may remain an intermediate release that will never make it to become official Apps if we get enough feedback from running the Beta Test Apps that we can fix some more problems for the next "official" Apps.

Following a suggestion from Gary these Beta test packages feature an app_info.xml that should allow for continuing a Task that has been assigned to and possibly partially crunched with an older App version with this Beta App (keeping the old App version number, though). Note that there are some clients with which this doesn't work as desired, i.e. that reset the project when switching the platform (I've seen this behavior with the first Universal (PPC+Intel) MacOS Clients). So this Beta Test also covers this app_info.xml scheme. If in doubt, wait at least until the currently running Task has finished, report it manually and install the Beta App then.

gcc-compiled Apps such as the ones from MacOS and Linux apparently get a little speedup from using ftol() instead of modf() (which we originally did to fix problems of the Windows App), but this release is not primarily meant to improve speed. We'll work on this not before we have the validation problems found solved.

Please test&report here.

MacOS PPC S5R2 App 4.29 available for Beta Test

First "known issue" occured here: on a 10.3 machine I couldn't get the graphics to display. stderr.txt reads

"RegisterProcess failed (error = -50)
Caught SIGABRT in graphics thread"

Is this just me?

I'll give it a try in about 11 hours when my current WU finishes. I have a G5 imac 1.83 Ghz. Still running Panther 10.3.9 and 5.10.7 Boinc Manager.

Message 70126 in response to message 70123

At the time of writing, the WU is just over six and a half hours in and only at 20%. Projection would indicate a total crunch of 33 hours. This seems long because the 4.20 app was doing them in 25 hours. (Wingman has claimed credit of 325 which is what I was consistently getting a month or so back for a 25 hour crunch, so I figure this is a similar length WU, not a longer one. 415 MHz if I've correctly understood that the frequency is shown in the filename.)

If the above is correct it might indicate either:
a) 4.29 beta app is only three-quarters the speed of 4.20 stock app, or
b) after briefly activating the graphics to check if it was working (which I never normally do), the graphics continues to be pointlessly processed despite not actually displaying.

Hm. b) should be cured by stopping and restarting the BOINC Manager (thus the Client and App, too).

What CPU (G3,G4,G5) is it running on? On the G4 I tested it on, the App was a little faster than the current official one (4 minutes test, though).

Is the continued background running of graphics a known phenomenon or are we guessing here? I'll be switching off for the night in 30 minutes and will time tomorrow's run graphics-free. The comparison should be interesting.

That's a (desired) effect of

That's a (desired) effect of the app_info.xml. Tasks that have already been assigned to an older version number will keep the old number, though the Task is finished with the new App. Only Tasks that have been gotten after installing the new App will be assigned the new number.

Message 70132 in response to message 70131

I reported that app 4.29 ran at 75% the speed of the stock 4.20 app after graphics were displayed briefly. I have now tracked the crunching time since restarting from the checkpoint the following day. Without the side issue of graphics, 4.29 runs at 82% the speed of 4.20. This finding accords exactly with a report from Josep on the Linux thread.

Mac PPC (or at least, my G5) and Linux betas appear to be losing 20% somewhere, Bernd. Wonder how Mac Intel and Windows are making out?
