I don't think such a localization like "my university with my server boxes runs my jobs" is part of their current plan. They need global task scheduling of the entire pool to deliver the heat where it's currently needed the most. Or at least doesn't hurt. As a customer you'd simply buy x hours of CPU time. You don't care where the actual calculations are performed.
Being bright, and enterprising is what uni is all about innit?
You're right they would notice if their kit was offline for any significant time, but not sure they would notice if part of its resources went awol for limited periods:-)
After all it would still be doing its heating job and crunching their data, just
it might well be doing a bit of time slicing as well:-)
The time slicing won't help if it runs under the native OS, as a simple check of process runtimes would reveal the cuckoo. However, if one managed to install a root kit.. they might as well just skip university and be hired by some software firm directly :D

The pc was in a Public area with a locked down user section that reset itself at every logout, he found a way around it and paid the price.
