honestly I wouldn't get anything X399. it's a dead platform.
Even though I own an X399 platform and cpu, I agree with Ian's assessment.
Dead platform. Even with the latest sTRX40 chipset. I don't see any future development from AMD.
That's true, but if you can get a rig built for good, used prices, they are excellent producers for CPU projects, such as Universe. I started with 1950X and doubled my production when I found a good price on a 2990WX. Now, I cannot upgrade further on that PC. Next time I need to replace my oldest PC, I'll see which platform looks most promising.
I have just canceled the a 5950x I ordered (they haven't shipped) and presumably will get the money back.
I have ordered a AIO water cooler for that CPU. I was wondering if simply cooling down my 3950x CPU more would give me headroom past the 4.125 GHz it is currently running? It is supposed to be able to Over Clock up to 4.3 GHz.

With better cooling you should get much closer to the 4.3Ghz boost clock on your 3950X.
Depends on the silicon quality as usual, but I could get my best 3950X to run 30/32 threads all-core at 4.3Ghz with no issues.
My current 3950X is stable running 4.275Ghz 30/32 threads all-core. Would probably run 4.3 with no issues if I could improve the temps a bit. It is running in a mixed gpu-cpu loop with two 1080 Ti's so the loop temperature is higher than if the cpu was running in its own loop by itself.
Tom, what AIO water cooler did you order? One of the top AIO's listed at Gamer's Nexus is the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 360 This does have a built in fan for cooling the VRM's also.
I already have the "best" air cooled solution (a Noctura 15H) so I was looking for something to do a better job on a 5950x. Since it is now unlikely I will get a 5950x I was looking to see how much more I could get out of my 3950x.
It looks likely I can get the same RAC as you are getting out of yours, so I was seeing how close I might be able to get to a 5950x (yours).
It will be interesting. That system (w/wo gpu crunching) is my best hope for getting into the higher regions of the rankings at U@H. By calculation I could conceivably manage a .9M score but given the examples you have it seems unlikely.

I need a torque wrench to install my Epyc cpu. I have a wrench but it doesn't have the "torque" functionality.
Its looking like it could be very expensive to get a whole toolkit for installing my EPYC cpu. I likely ruined a MB because I wasn't using a real torque wrench.
Does anyone have a "real" AMD Threadripper/EPYC torque wrench source?

eBay. that's where I got mine.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/255106283340?hash=item3b6584f74c:g:4hgAAOSwRY5hJE~r
it's gonna take a little while from China, but the seller looks to have a decent reputation. I'd trust it.

Does yours "click" when it hits the torsion level? My original one did. I have one that doesn't.
