So this means x86_64 support

So this means x86_64 support is not planned for the near future???? Sad really as all my replacement machines will be running 64 bit Linux for now on so as time passes ill have less and less machines able to crunch Einstein at least :(

My current plan is to build

My current plan is to build and distribute a native x86_64 App for the next run ("S5R2"), which should start next month. Currently I can neither tell how long exactly it will take to have a native App (I'll definitely not build one from the "old" code that's currently running), nor if and when the Admins find the time to set up things for automatic download of the 32bit App - my guess is that this will not happen during the last weeks of the current run.

Cool! You can count on me if you need any beta-tester.

Thanks.

Im also happy to beta test :)

Im also happy to beta test :) Didn't realize we are so close to the end of a run. It is kinda pointless wasting time now if the apps about to change again. So lets finish that run up for you and then we can wait for a native x86_64 app.

An updated x86-64 Linux

An updated x86-64 Linux client, version 5.8.15, can be downloaded from boinc_5.8.15_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.tgz (make sure to read the file "README.x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" in it).

Crunch3r's x64 Windows client, version 5.8.11, can be found at boinc_5.8.11_windows_amd64.zip.

For more information, see BoincStats Forum.

Here's the new recommended

Here's the new recommended version for the x86-64 Linux client:

  • * Untar the file

boinc_5.8.17_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.tgz at the BOINC working directory.
* Read the file "README.x86_64-pc-linux-gnu".
Again, Crunch3r's x64 Windows client can be found at boinc_5.8.11_windows_amd64.zip.

For more information, see BoincStats Forum.

Here's an updated app_info

Here's an updated app_info for the new S5R2 wu's

einstein_S5R2_4.14_i686-pc-linux-gnu.so

einstein_S5RI_4.17_i686-pc-linux-gnu

and the following files need to be downloaded -

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/download/einstein_S5R2_4.14_i686-pc-linux-gnu
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/download/einstein_S5R2_4.14_i686-pc-linux-gnu.so

If you haven't already attached your 64bit box to E@H you need to.

Create the app_info.xml file in the Einstein project directory (typically, ~/BOINC/projects/einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ ), and copy the two downloaded files into you E@H project directory, you'll need to set the executable bit on the first file (the one that doesn't end in .so). Stop BOINC, then restart it.

If all went well there will be a message early on in the log stating app_info found for Einstein.

It would still be nice if the project officially supported the x86_64 platform though, either by automatically sending the 32bit app to 64bit boxes or by compiling a native 64bit app.

NOTE: Apparently *buntu users had problems running the S5RI app so those difficulties may still persist.

The new official app is 4.21 - so here's an updated app_info. Note the sections dealing with S5RI and S5R2 ver 4.14 have been dropped.

As part of introduction of alternative platform in BOINC version 5.9.X and newer there is an additional tag in app_info.xml, which is rather mandatory: .... If it's not there, BOINC will error out on receiving new tasks as well as on resuming existing ones.

New tag has to be in the same section of the file as is. An example:

...

       einstein_S5R2
       421
       x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

...

My experiments so far showed that the platform name has to match primary platform name and not the alternative one (but I may be wrong about this).

New tag in the app_info.xml is harmless for old BOINC CC (5.8.17 or older) and if present it's simply ignored.
