Hi,
I've a small question. I started distributed computing back in 1999 with seti@home and crunched on something. I only run dc software on computers when they're running anyway and never let any computer run just for the sake of seti/einstein/climate prediction/whatever.
That means clients are mostly working when I am sitting in front of the PC. Ok, now I like SILENT PCs. This is not so easy when your CPU usuage is always at 100%. Right now I have a Duron 1300 in a sound absorbing tower with lots of slow rotating fans and a good PSU. This is ok, but could be more silent.
Right now I'm thinking about using an Athlon64 based setup. Clocking the CPU down to 1Ghz in idle mode should gib a TDP of ca. 25 W when the machine is idle. Problem is what will happen if I run any BOINC projects? Under Linux this is no problems since some cpufreq governors don't count nice'd processes (powernowd for example), so that would give BOINC 100% CPU utilisation at 1GHz without forcing the CPU to maximum frequency. This should keep the CPU a lot cooler than running 100% at 2,XX GHz.
Is this also possible under Windows (since I have to dual boot here): Exclude low prority tasks from being considered when deciding whether to rise CPU frequency?

I suppose you could also consider working on the problem from the other end by wearing noise-cancellation earphones while you are sitting in front of the PC.

I run a AMD64 with cool 'n' quiet. Under BOINC projects it will run at 200x5,just set the cool and quiet option to automatic mode under power settings. (windows btw. It will stay at 200x5 and run about 20C cooler.

I have the same adversity to computer noise as you do. I was getting quite desperate and ended up watercooling my two prescott based proccessors. I use the kooolance system and belive me this move was well worth the money.
I have zero noise coming out of both boxes since thier are no case fans just some radator fans that throttle themselves down to nothing when the temp is below 36c/97f. which is quite low for a fully loaded prescott going 24/7.
so the amd which runs much cooler anyway do to single threading and short pipelines would give you no noise.

No problem.
Exchange your Duron with an AthlonXP (if possible), use an PSU with an slow 12cm fan (GoldenField f.e.), use silent CPU Coolers (f.e. Arctic Cooling or see here) and finally install a 8cm fan in front of your harddisc. This should help lowing the temperature in the PC.
Use can use also software like CPUCooL.
