So I got a new computer with a GeForce 9300 GE. It has 256 MB of Video RAM which I guess is not enough to run CUDA on it. Is it possible to upgrade the Video RAM on it?
I seriously doubt it since it is probably soldered, not socketed. Also, the firmware would have to be changed to see the extra memory. Best to ask this question from the manufacturer help desk or forums.

No you cannot upgrade the memory, it is what it is. Some pc's allow you to use system ram to supplement video ram but Boinc does not recognize that and only sees what is actually built into the card. I am glad you got the card working!!!! And no I do not know of a site that compiles all of that info, right now there are not alot of projects that use the gpu so it may not be worthwhile. PrimeGrid and Seti will also be able to use your card I think.

The GeForce 9300 has 16 shader-networks as my GTX 310M. This I found on the NVIDIA-homepage. It seems to me feasible, that the amount of the neccessary Video-RAM is proportional to the number of shader-networks and my GTX 310M never uses more than 160MB of Video-RAM, as you can see from my measurements here. So I would expect, you can use it for our purpose. Try it and report here, but before install the newest driver form the NVIDIA-homepage.

I'm running the latest driver for this card that I downloaded off of Nvidia's site. Einstein won't send any CUDA tasks saying my NVIDIA GPU has insufficient memory (300MB needed).
Seti@Home won't run on my GPU either as it says it needs 254MB but Boinc is reporting I only have 241MB. Supposedly I have a 256MB card in my system.
Is the 9300 also the primary display card on that computer? If so, some of the video RAM will be needed by the OS to display your desktop, etc. The Windows Vista/7 Aero theme is notoriously memory hungry.

You can also try turning the resolution down to only 16 bit instead of the standard 32bit but if you use the laptop it will look really bad like that!

I think you're confusing resolution and colour depth. Either will look horrible!
But I very much doubt you would gain enough extra memory to make a difference. My best monitors are 1600 x 1200 x 32, which is just 7.5 megabytes of video RAM - hardly worth saving.
Turning down fancy 3-D effects is more likely to make a worthwhile difference.
