Believe it or not I was over on the Seti boards
reading some stuff in the Politics section.

It gets quite contentious over there at times )

I stay away from SETI Politics... If I didn't, I'm sure I would get myself into trouble over there.

Which is why we don't do that here.

Now I gave up on understanding cricket terminology the day I discovered that 'midwicket' wasn't. DownUnda we get our village idiots* to play a game called Australian Rules FightBall which suitably contains their bloodlust to Saturday afternoons, under observation. Those who get the red mist but don't want to get hurt can just watch. Eating meat pies while doing so completes the circle back to Roman times ie. bread and circuses.

In fact most Australians pay more attention to their team's choice of full-forward, ruck and rover than to choice of government, and the results reflect that priority. It's all dis/mis-placed tribalism anyway. Those that do concern themselves with politics are correctly identified as , and thus at a BBQ it is deemed bad form to talk of anything other than sports, family, money and your work. Those that attempt to bring up politics get served the burnt snags ( sausages ) and are duly placed in the seat next to the dog kennel well away from the alcohol trough. Anyone who attempts to create social strata according to voting preference get short shrift. Rightly so. Even those who beaver away at constructing their very own moral high grounds are socially nuked pronto .... :-)

It is good to see Annie taking maths and physics seriously, please note that the cartoon punchline is 'I feel this step in the middle needs more work' .... :-). She has displayed flawless** ability at calculus.

Cheers, Mike.

* Since you need 20 players, including subs, per side then you would rightly deduce DownUnda villages have no shortage of candidates.

** For a given definition of 'flaw'.

Mike: oh gawd, it's worse

Mike: oh gawd, it's worse than I thought or even imagined.

Annie: sorry, but I had too little sleep last night and too little caffeine this morning to read your post in less than five waking moments. Suffice to say, I have no guess du jour.

Bill: still not worrying about it. If you pass me, you pass me.

Scott: I thought I was going to say something, but even after going back to look, I still can't remember what. (See comment to Annie.)

Come to think of it (after being away from my desk for an hour in the middle of writing this post), it might have been that I was going to agree with you about Seti Politics. (We would violently disagree with each other, for one thing.)

Speaking of being away, I'm now getting a nagging feeling that I may have wanted to respond to something someone said with a rather obscure Hitchhiker's reference, but I can't remember what or why.

Mike again: I believe the caption was "I think you should be more explicit here."

Oh! I know! I don't remember what I intended to respond to (Politics, I suppose), but I was going to say "I come in peace. Take me to your lizard." And in fact I remember now. It was about Mike's comment about cricket being more important to people than elections. "The people are just people and the leaders are lizards. The people elect the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Then why don't the vote the lizards out?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. Since they all have the vote, they all assume that the government they have is more or less the one they want." "Why do the people keep voting for the lizards?" "Because if they didn't vote for the lizards, the wrong lizard might get in."

Needless to say, I'm a bit more awake now than I was before. Not enough to try reading Annie's post again, though. But I will ask a question (which is obviously another thing I was forgetting before that I wanted to do):

Am I mostly looking at people in the correct century? You said some 300 years after Joan of Arc. She having lived in the early 1400s, I've been looking for people born in the 1700s (notwithstanding Evangeline Booth). I was really hoping to find someone in the connection between my family and the Adamses, but no Christmas births came up.

P.S. For those of you who live in the US and whose local PBS station is doing their pledge drive right now, if they run a show about trains tonight, there's a miniscule chance of me being in it. They shot a sequence at the museum with an elevated train and two streetcars coming out of a barn in a wave. I was running the second streetcar. (I qualified as an operator later that day; at the moment of the video shoot, I had someone sitting behind me watching. He didn't do it because he'd been working on restoring something and was wearing a grubby t-shirt instead of a clean uniform.) So, IF this is even the show with the museum shoot in it, and IF they used that clip, then MAYBE you can see me inside the car at the controls. (I sort of hope not.)

To be clear, this is Aussie Rules* :

.... I believe they are executing a tricky play called the 'melee manoeuvre'. The general object of play, the fightball itself, is obscured by one of the players. We are so pleased that all the gladiator nonsense that Russ Crowe went on about is long dead :

... note the live HD feed to your living room ( on subscription too ).

I'll see if Fox News is covering it DownUnda.

Cheers, Mike.

* The guy in the yellow is a neutral observer called an umpire ( very frequently bestowed other unofficial titles as well ) whose main role is to award points for initiative and 'flair', but he gives penalties to any players on the rare occasions where they don't enthusiastically participate. Note also the loose clothing in the bottom right corner. Disrobing is common and often helpfully assisted by fellow players. The black sheeting behind the players I am less sure about. It is likely some new fangled blood spatter containment system.

( edit ) I must apologise for any slight vein of sarcasm in my description above. That might be because I feel put out, as no-one is offering me a five figure sum per weekend to behave like a prat that off-field would attract criminal charges.

"Because if they didn't vote

"Because if they didn't vote for the lizards, the wrong lizard might get in."

Ah. I was the president of a kindergarten committee many lunar eclipses ago and I recall having to cut short a discussion - about the exact placement of a certain bin - after 30 minutes of wrangling. I ruthlessly abused my Presidential Power to break a tie, specifically by tossing a coin and voting appropriately. To the howls and wails of all parties. I simply stated that I did so in order to end the matter. The actual social subtext ( there is always a subtext ) related to "what Darren had said about our Shirley" some 4 years ago ie. the bin was a proxy target. I did not contend re-election.

Cheers, Mike.
