Well. Shall I just say I won't be looking up ( even for 4 minutes ) "bostrilliums canalliums" ... but nice try ! :-)

Major Thread Sapper is a virtual/digital commando who may plague an online realm such as this. Might even be disguised as a friendly Aussie ( fake ) medico in suitable context.

Now I say Sixth as Terry Pratchett took it out to Five in "Thief Of Time".

Shoot. I just knew it! I've been underquoting all along.

As for Anniet's last post in Two Ones then word wise : fission, boffin, hero, joined up.

Me try : Edward Teller ( effectively Dr Strangelove ) the co-designer of the 'Super' or fusion bomb ?

ie. a boffin anti-hero but doing joined up anti-fission ?

Cheers, Mike.

NB. FWIW we have just missed an anniversary of the first fusion explosion - that we know of on this planet - Nov 1 1952. Now don't get spooked, but the device/test was called "Ivy Mike". So there you go, I partly share part of the name of a gadget that can really mess with a neighbourhood.

( edit ) And of course a fusion bomb, or twenty-seven, will make a ruddy good Armageddon. Plus Stars are fusing all the time ....

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

That's a GOOD one! I wish I'D thought of that :) but I didn't.

This one :( Y-e-e-s. My commiserations. So are all bombs given names? Or just the really big flattening ones with a mushroom on top?

:( Enewetak Atoll... Do you think when they originally named it they knew how... spookily apt it would sound after 1952? *dilate pupils manually* Maybe that's why they chose it...

I imagine it sounds different to how it looks written down though...

yep! I was right ---> æ̯ænʲee̯ɔ̯ɔ͡ɛɛ̯dˠɑk <--- that's how you say it peoples. You're welcome! :)

Yes... split by three like that... And eighty one would be... well... even ruddier. Plus stars? Yes :))) lots of them I think :) and yes they are. :)

Sorry! was a mistake :) 40 days and nights seems harsh don't you think? Wasn't like you posted Thomas the Tank Engine or anything... biblical wrath eh...

Still looking for "end of days"... A second round of suggestions is permissable so keep them coming if you can :)

And I might have to do something about all these animals soon... *step in something I'd rather not discuss*

See you later :)

Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Oh yez. Back then special code names. To induce the Russians to think that the Americans were merely occasionally fishing with a bigger than average hand grenade. The Russkies ( as they were then known ) came up with the biggest ever @ ~ 57 Megatons yield. Despite being commies they called it the Tsar Bomba ie. King Bomb. Estimates are contended, but about a 50 mile diameter circle of Siberian countryside was obliterated right to ground level. A real terrain scraper. It was an air deliverable weapon, not that I would like to be the crew of that plane. After manufacture it was tested as a self evident message across the Cold War divide.

Ok still nukes and world destruction on my brain : Fidel Castro. Today is an anniversary of the blockade of Cuba lifting in 1962 ?

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) Enewetak Atoll : I think this name is retrospective ie. the bomb scrambled and lost some of it's letters. So maybe it could have been : WeTakeAlotOfNewSheep ..... ??

Do you mean like 'rapture'? Or like Arnold's movie?

It is STILL chilly here today, 34F right now, but this weekend it is supposed to hit 70F! Must be the speech tonight that will cause the temps to go up so fast!

Hi Mikey :) when you say Arnold are we talking The Terminator here? :) It's kind of what this is about yes :) but if you're thinking the term I'm thinking when I'm thinking Arnold... it's not that one either. And there's the small matter of him having returned too often... and already :)

You're close with the rapture toooo... but it's not what we need, sorry.

Maybe it was retroactive wishful thinking... you know... like the bullet with your name on it except a lot larger... and designed a bit on the too late side (apologies to alleged descendents for facetiousness)

*read above - learn something forgotten sometime since high school* Afraid not no. Sorry :( Missiles do worry people though don't they? *perturbed frown* I know Pugwash (CPT) would have liked it if before he died, we didn't have any to worry about. Bet he'd be right ticked off if he knew we were still pointing them at each other...

Shame they bombed it then really :/ *look round thread* we could do with somewhere like that now...

Good morning Bill :)

stars

"Rail buff" is a term used by people who aren't. No self-respecting railfan calls himself a buff.

It is possible that someday in the distant future, a mostly boring 24+ minute video taken on board a certain streetcar at a certain museum being brought out of the barn and around the loop may be posted. Time will tell.

Would Einstein be too obvious, Annie?

[edit]
I love how Scott just pops in here with his good morning or whatever and totally ignores all the chaos going on around him.

One of those could really mess up your day if you were within

I'm going to climb on my soap box here for a minute.

David is absolutely right. "Rail Buff", as used by real railroaders, is a mostly derogatory term used to describe those wannabe rail fans who are nutty and dangerous. As opposed to a real rail fan who knows to be safe and stay out of dangerous situations.

When we come around a curve at 60 mph and as much as 40 million pounds, and see a "buff" standing in the middle of the rails to get that perfect picture, they don't realize what they do to the crews. Not to mention their families when they trip trying to get off the rails and fall down.

All of you, please take this to heart. I'm going to describe how railroaders handle the above situation. When we see someone standing on the tracks, we don't hit the brakes, we keep going. This is not to be mean, this is not to try to hit the person, or worse. There are much bigger concerns, as much as it sucks to say that. If we throw the train into emergency braking in an attempt to not hit that person, we take a chance on derailing the train, with all it's weight and chemicals, possibly scattering it through a town or city, losing many many more lives in the process. Not to mention that by the time we see you, it's too late. The train will not slow enough to make any difference. It can take up to 2 miles to stop a heavy train traveling at track speed.

Trains are dangerous and there are precious few second chances if you make a mistake. Trains are very cool things, just please watch from a safe distance.

One more tidbit. Those of you who may think I was kidding about how heavy trains are. My record train weight is well in excess of 40 million pounds. That's 20,000 tons.

Trust me, we have the public's, and YOUR, best interest at heart. Stay safe out there watching trains.

(Steps off soap box)
