"09:40:44 (3067): No heartbeat from core client for 30 sec - exiting"
I think there is the base for your problems.

I give up. What does no heartbeat mean in this context? I am not running my machines as a cluster which is the only context for heartbeat I can think of.

it means boinc couldnt "talk" to einstein for 30 seconds.
i had this problem a while back, it especially occurred when an antivirus scan was in progress. changing "Suspend work if CPU usage is above " to 80% solved this in my case.
seeing without seeing is something the blind learn to do, and seeing beyond vision can be a gift.

I am trying that. If that is the problem then dropping below 80% is a frequent occurrence and some multi-thread apps can drop them all below 80%. This would also explain why when I shifted to the newest computer for daily work its RAC has not lived up to even a back of the envelop estimate of about 3000 credits per day.
BTW: In my original post I was not trying to be critical. I know it can be touchy when a newbie appears critical. This can be as simple as a single byte wrong or not detecting the diff between Phenom and Athlon II. As I did not see the problem for 10 months on the Phenom seeing it regularly on the Athlon made me think it was worth reporting.
Also this is not an excuse to brag. I bought the quads as refurbed HP machines from tigerdirect.com for the price of new x2 machines.

Having set it to 80% my RAC is returning to what I expected and had achieved before making it my "workhorse" machine.
