Hi John, G'day Bodley,
I reread the explanation on the link and I'm not sure that it's entirely correct. I don't recall the word being reserved exclusively for men, I thought it was used equally.
Also, a work colleague explained to me that the word had been falling in to disuse for the past 15 years, something I hadn't noticed. I think it actually became the bane of many English expatriates lives. He and his wife moved here about 50 years ago and were now more relaxed about their accents.
I only seem to notice it's use when we are playing for the Ashes and then mostly from the English commentators. We'd ask them not too, but that would lack a degree of tolerance. ;-)
The change in Australian attitudes to non-minorities seems to come from the time when the country headed down the road of reconciliation. Quite a number of the cavalier colloquialisms seem to changed meanings, or appear to be falling in to disuse.

There may be hope for us yet ;-D
Hi Mike.
I am an irreverent Western Australian - and VERY proud of it.
In my life I have spent many years in Halls Creek ... where the epithet is applied to almost anybody WHO IS A PAL - and is used freely and with NO malice whatsoever.
When applied to someone who is not a pal, or is said in an antagonistic voice ... then expect fireworks ...!!!!
I am an unadulterated scrub Western Australian with a total love for my Country and my State. I hope to
keep WA the World's best kept secret for at least as long as I have known WA (since 1966)! - which will take me WAY beyond my obituary ... !!!

I would never have thought of Western Australian as irreverent. I've been around far to long for that ;-)
Australians are only let in when there is sunshine on the Earth.
But them again we always have sunshine someplace. Most lickely in Australia.
But seems that the people from there are quiet on the boards, speek up!!!!
quiet yes, but never totally silent. can't work out why more people who are constantly connected to the net for gaming can't be a part of something worthwhile like this

I was tempted to add the usual epithet, but this IS a well-mannered board.
