Local preferences are a sub-set of online preferences.  Everything you can do locally can be done online.  In fact there are things you set online that can't be done locally.

The disadvantage for online is that the preference change is not 'immediate'.  It can't be.  It has to wait for the client to contact the project before the client becomes aware of the change.  You can speed this up by clicking 'update' in the manager.  In other words, a 'local' pref change will always be immediate for the client without the client needing to talk to the project.

That means local prefs will always override project prefs.  If you look carefully in the manager (advanced view) under options->computing prefs, the top of the page tells you you are using local prefs and has a button to allow you to go back to using web prefs (if you wish).  Personally, I have a lot of machines all using local prefs simply for the convenience of adjusting individual machines when needed.  However, they all rely on standard settings that come from the project that don't get adjusted locally.

When you were using your website prefs for computing, did you click the "Advanced settings" dropdown to see all the extra settings?  Are these the things you thought you were missing?

The best way to get started with understanding the intricacies of preference setting is to consult the manual on preferences.  The language is terse but it really pays to read it all slowly and carefully :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

Haven't tried it yet, but I

Haven't tried it yet, but I am guessing that it will remain working.  I guess I think that because there is no setting for it in the online preferences.  I will give it a shot tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks,

Allen

Gary, I did as you said

Gary,

I did as you said above when I set my preferences up and I always use "update".  I would post snapshots of the stuff, but it is too hard for me to do that with the options that Boinc gives in the Mgr.  I also can't seem to post screen shots,  so I just do the best I can to explain what I am doing.

I did switch back to online prefs and nothing happened, so I switched back to local.

I am now having a problem with one of my machines that is running linux.  It is struggling with FGRPSSE work units.  It will start saying that a wu will take 8 hrs and then basically stall out or start adding time back on, when it gets to over a day to finish and still showing 5 hours to complete.

This machine has 8 cores and runs at 4 Mhz.  I have cut it back to 4 cores just to see if it will do any better.  This was my best producing machine on Milkyway, so this is strange.

Any thoughts?

Well, I guess I didn't wait

Well, I guess I didn't wait long enough for the change to take place.  When I switched to online, it ignored the info I put in on the cpus to use when computer is not being used.  It started running 4, so I set it back to the local and it (seems to be), is just running the 1 cpu again.

Allen, I am not going to get

Allen, I am not going to get involved with your discussion about "app_config.xml info", but I will comment about how you can get your snapshots to post.

For one, you need to get an online photo storage program like https://www.flickr.com/photos.  (There are more, but I think this is easy to use.)  It is free for use, and you can store up to 1,000 photos of your choosing, regardless of the camera type.  You can pay for the Pro version if you're a professional, but for simple use - WHY?  They have an uploader installed that takes your images that you choose and resizes the image for use in other programs, like BOINC, emails, whatever.

There are a few steps involved in doing so, but once you get the hang of it you'll find it fairly easy to do.

If you want to try it, and need help with getting pictures or snapshots posted, let me know.  Send me a private message and I'll be glad to help.
