They may have to ration them to help keep the scalping under control.

as always, wait for reviews.

Nvidia Geforce marketing numbers are ALWAYS framed around video games FPS numbers using the latest AI/DLSS technologies and are not at all applicable to raw compute loads of BOINC.

it will be faster
it will not be 2x faster

Yes, the proof will be seeing what it actually can do- I am sure some benchmark they ran will match the 4090, but what is the performance across multiple benchmarks? Yet to be seen.

Yeah, the scalping will be bad.

I worked ahead and received a grant to purchase a 5090 (to replace some older GPUs) but I have no idea how close to the release it will be before we actually have it in-hand. Pretty excited about it though!

The problem being the same

The problem being the same for the last couple of generations is that the software is always a couple generations behind the hardware.

Only because of new generative AI tools is the software finally going to catch up to the hardware's capability.

A nice article looking at the claim that the 5070 will match the 4090 (and 4070) found here.  Spoiler: It won't (for what we do).

Do we have a good read on how much of again in processing speed MPS is providing?

3 percent, 5 percent 20 percent?

depends entirely on the workload and your settings.

20-30% gain is not unusual.

My 4080 windows machine is now out of tasks. It will be interesting to see the gain when I load up Ubuntu and the secret squirrel apps with MPS.

The issue is with mixing pre and post Volta GPUs in combination with MPS. you dont need to test every possible combination to find what does or doesnt work. MPS has different implementations for "Pascal and older" and "Volta and newer".

From MPS docs wrote:

The Volta architecture introduced new MPS capabilities. Compared to MPS on pre-Volta GPUs, Volta MPS provides a few key improvements:

  • Volta MPS clients submit work directly to the GPU without passing through the MPS server.

  • Each Volta MPS client owns its own GPU address space instead of sharing GPU address space with all other MPS clients.

  • Volta MPS supports limited execution resource provisioning for Quality of Service (QoS).

Pascal + Maxwell (both pre-Volta) = works
Volta + Ampere (both post-Volta) = works
Pascal + Ampere (pre and post Volta) = wont work (the Pascal card will not be detected)

just about any combination will work together when you are not using MPS if they are supported by the same driver.

I have seen pretty good prices on both on eBay.  The lowest cost ones may already be gone though.
