First computer I used was in 1977. Programmed it using punch cards stacked in a card hopper.
Next big evolution was when we got a 'teletype' style interface. We typed directly to paper and every response from the computer came out on the same paper. It came with every second line in green and white on 'fan-fold' boxes of paper.
After that was the arrival of an 'American Dream Machine' monochrome terminal with the keyboard as a wrap around extension from the screen itself, so cool looking at the time, it was very ergonomically evolved in an era that didn't even know what the term meant.
This was the same time as the American Research Projects Agency Network was being used by U.S.A.'s big four universities, and subsequently evolved into the world wide web.
I have been in the IT world ever since, and like they say, it feels like I never worked a day in my life, I love doing what I do so much.
I just found out there is a possibility of being accredited with a new discovery such as a Neutron Star if lucky enough to be the person who first works that work unit on their computer. What an incredible honour that would be ! It is literally like winning the lottery, there are so many people supporting this and all the other wonderful BOINC projects, so only very few will ever win this exciting accolade.
I started out on SETI when it came with its own client which showed a lovely graphic of the kind of data that was being processed. It looked like a living thing which captured the imagination and made you want to be part of something bigger. I started on BOINC when I heard of Gridcoin, and it is one of the best practical applications for a cryptocurrency to be based on, even if it does not get mainstream support. I am sorry to see SETI finally gone silent, so I hope Einstein lives on as a worthy successor to hand the baton for scientific discovery over to.
