So as luck would have it I won the EVGA lotto and was selected to purchase one of their Hybrid (Water Cooled) 3080TI graphics cards at MSRP. (Only took 10 months of trying) Card arrived before Christmas and was installed. Holidays means not much use, but as soon as we got past the holidays and I put that baby to use she developed a hot spot almost immediately that throttled the card. All other temps were fine, just that mystery hot spot. You probably think I'm going to rant about poor quality or something along those lines, NOPE.
My rant is about the fact that so many people are desperate to get these cards that EVGA is now having to charge double collateral to cross ship you a card. Apparently many people are submitting RMA's, getting the card replaced, then not returning the original card and scalping it for 2 to 3 times what its worth and just paying EVGA the MSRP for not returning the original. Long story short, I now have a >3k hold on my credit card until I can get the original back to EVGA. Thank goodness I'm in a position to accept that charge! I wonder how many people out there will get a new defective card and not be able to come up with the collateral to cross ship and have to sit with a dead system for weeks? Scalpers suck!
OK Rant finished, thanks for your time.

Until the EVGA rep explained it to me I was clueless as well. He had to explain it to me because I was more than a little irritated with him when he told me how much collateral I was going to have to provide for the cross ship.

Cross ship is great to save time on getting the replacement, especially if the original is still limping along. Did they offer a non cross-ship option (you return, which triggers their sending you the replacement). The logic would suggest that should avoid the double collateral requirement.

EVGA does offer a non cross-ship option. choosing cross-ship is totally up to the customer, it's not something they force you to do. and they only even offer cross-ship to people who have purchased from EVGA directly (in most cases). I did the same thing when I needed to RMA my 3080Ti. $3000 hold on my credit card for a couple weeks. no big deal since you'll get the money back as long as you send the defective GPU back.
if you don't have 2x MSRP of spare credit line, then don't choose that option. you can do the standard RMA where you package up the GPU and ship it back to them (on your own dime $20-30 shipping, but they might send you a free shipping label if it's a relatively new purchase like within 1month or you press for it), they review the product and send you a replacement.
cross-ship is only for convenience of having the least down time. in my case I opted for it because my GPU was watercooled in a custom loop and I didnt want to have the system apart for 2-3 weeks or have to reconfigure it, having a second GPU to just swap out directly was a lot easier. but that convenience comes with a price of having to pay for it.

Don't misunderstand the rant. In fact, if anything this is a tribute to EVGA. I don't know of any other company as easy to work with for post purchase support as EVGA. In fact, I don't know of any other company that will cross ship you a replacement part like EVGA will. I was just blindsided when I was told it would be 2 times MSRP for the cross ship collateral. Yes, you get that money back, but its still an unwelcome surprise.
So just to be clear, I hate scalpers!
