the messages below are repeated numerous times and they are all I've ever gotten with running Einstein... am I doing something wrong?

I've read on the forums that this type of 'error' isn't really an error but just a legacy warning so what I want to know is whether my log below signifies errors worthy of a project reset or to just ignore them....

thanks for any advice

A reset of the project won't help you. The cause for the errors is:

Activated exception handling...
22:53:51 (2388): Can't acquire lockfile (32) - waiting 35s
22:54:26 (2388): Can't acquire lockfile (32) - exiting
22:54:26 (2388): Error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. (0x20)

You should ensure that your AV program doesn't actively scan the BOINC data directory.

What is your preference setting for "Use at most XX percent of CPU time"?

Thanks Gundolf, My preference for CPU usage is 33% (default?) I can't find the location of the data folder but have excluded all Boinc folders from the scanner (Avast). Thanks for your help.

The default is 100%. There have been problems reported with settings other than 100%, although mainly for multi-core machines. But perhaps you should try that option too.

If you restart the BOINC client, the data directory is listed in the Messages tab, like this:18-Apr-2009 10:48:30 [---] Data directory: C:\Programme\BOINC

OK, I've set the Avast

Message 92695 in response to message 92694

OK, I've set the Avast scanner to exclude the Boinc data folder.

And I have set the BOINC manager CPU setting to 100%. I would still like to limit the CPU usage on my other projects. I know I can set the CPU settings in the account preferences in the projects' websites but which setting is then given priority? - the CPU usage as set in the website account preferences or the CPU usage as set in the BOINC manager preferences?

Thanks again

The manager settings override the website settings locally on the computer where you set them.

The BOINC builtin throttle mechanism is not very sophisticated, due to compatibility issues between operating systems. If you really need to throttle your CPU, there are external tools like ThreadMaster or TThrottle (see BOINC add-on software).

OK, might try the throttle

Message 92697 in response to message 92696

OK, might try the throttle programs if the CPU is getting too hot and hopefully the AV exclusion will work. Thanks for your help.

I don't seem to be able to successfully compute Einstein WUs - I've excluded the relevant BOINC data folder from Avast on-access scanning and have set CPU usage to 100% so I don't what to do to get this to work... no point continuing with BOINC if I can't reliably contribute to the project's results

You are running the latest and greatest version of Boinc, try dropping back a couple of versions and try again. On the download page when it shows you the version to download there is a tab that says All versions near the bottom of the page, click it and you will see the other versions available for the different OS's. You might try 6.4.7 or even go back further to 5.8.16. Just be aware that at some point they will turn the ability to be used off those old versions. We are not talking anytime soon though, as far as I know. Personally I am still using 6.2.?? on most of my machines.
