Oops!! Now there's a young physicist with a future. I'm unsure what the term 'concentrator' means when applied to a student. Probably like 'intern' perhaps.

Cheers, Mike.

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

Good idea to write a letter to "Sterne und Weltraum". So we can hope to have more participants for E@H.

Best regards

Sounds like it's well spotted, not bad for an undergrad – pretty important to know which particles come from which jet, and at the higher energies it's not hard to see why sorting out all the data produced by such collisions is a monumental effort to begin with. For just proton-proton collisions (at 7 TeV per beam) they're expecting about 600 million collisions per second!

It was the first time I've seen 'concentrator' applied that way too, and none of the usual definitions are helpful, so it must be fairly new. After some reading on things like solar energy and internet hubs, I finally found a reference to the definition of (prefaced with academic) concentrators here. Summarizing quickly:
“A major is a program of study offering both depth and breadth is a particular discipline or field of study ... A major must comprise a minimum of 30 semester-hours ...
A major may offer concentrations, areas of specialization within the field of study ... A concentration must include a minimum of 12 semester-hours of specialized course work ...
A minor is a program of study with less depth than a major ... A minor has a minimum of 15 semester-hours and a maximum of 18 semester-hours ...

Good concentrating by Quan, anyway :)

And we also know now, what physics students are doing over Spring Break instead of going to Florida ;-)
