This App incorporates SSE vector code, but doesn't have a CPU feature detection. It will badly crash on non-SSE machines. It probably won't cure the 'signal 11' problem, it has the same BOINC code as the 4.20.

Only run this if you're sure of what you're doing.

Find it on the revived Power User Apps page.

Happy crunching!

Hmmm..this app seems to require more than just SSE, maybe SSE2? It won't run on my PIII-S which does have SSE but lacks SSE2 (it terminates with a SIGILL illegal instruction exception).

I guess this will also exclude Athlon and Athlon XP CPUs.

EDIT: Yes, this app. definitely contains SSE2 instructions. I guess Athlon 64, Opteron, Pentium 4, Pentium M , Core and Core 2 CPUs should be OK.

Almost tempting enough to fire up my Ubuntu VM and try...

Almost.......

Preliminary results, looks

Preliminary results, looks like at least 20% speedup over 4.20, and possibly more than 25%.

This is on what kind of CPU? Core 2 should benefit more than Core and Pentium 4.

I got a signal 6 error; the power user app or just my box again? Debugger was running...
It's a Core CPU, so no problem with SSE.

Hi Annika!

Hmm...I can't see any 4.21 result in your stats, is it already uploaded ?

Core 2. This is the machine.

Tasks started with 4.20 and finished successfully with 4.21:89794719 89796382

First pure 4.21 task on this machine should finish within the next five hours:89807797

Nice work, Bernd!

I switched when the newest one was running, meaning the last part of it would have been crunched with the new app, wouldn't it? The crash didn't occur directly after the app change, btw, but hours later.

Is it this one? http://einsteinathome.org/task/89802969

I think that one was still crunched exclusively by 4.20, see the debug output:

634, 635, 2007-12-17 15:08:32.0246 [normal]: Built at: Nov 29 2007 15:00:43

2007-12-17 15:08:32.0248 [normal]: Start of BOINC application 'einstein_S5R3_4.20_i686-pc-linux-gnu'.
2007-12-17 15:08:32.0249 [normal]: Found 'EAH_DEBUG_DDD' file, trying debugging with 'ddd'

I've just installed this on

I've just installed this on my 2.8 GHz P-4 Xeon, and on my Athlon64 6000+ machines. So far, so good.

Since Bikeman gave us a heads-up about his P-3 machines, I've decided not to try it on any of mine.
