Question: If the project scientists believe the S5 design run might have a chance of detecting a known pulsar such as the Crab nebula pulsar, why not analyze this data first?

Imho the project would then be able to announce to the world "We have discovered gravity waves!!", and then proceed to analysis of the remaining data at that point in time?

For looking at a single, known pulsar, you simply don't need the massive computational resources. You know pretty well where this pulsar is and you exactly know how it is spinning from its electromagnetic emissions. Looking at a single known pulsar can not (and need not) be split up to tasks for tenth of thousands of computers connected loosely over the Internet.

So, E@H is dedicated to look for unknown pulsars, because this involves the "parameter guessing" that makes the search so demanding, crunching-wise.

Checking the known pulsars is done by other research groups, and I guess they have a constant eye on Crab.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense! :)

On the BOINC site there are

On the BOINC site there are ppt slides by prof.Allen describing Einstein@home at the Geneva BOINC event this September
The Third Pan-Galactic BOINC Workshop took place 5-6 Sept. in Geneva. The proceedings, including talk slides and notes from the breakout sessions, are here.

Thanks for the tip! Dr. Allen's presentation (as well as the other presentations) made for very interesting reading (and made me more enthusiastic for crunching the S5R3 run!) :)
