Ahem...we are still talking about a BOINC crunching machine, right?

All of the Quad Xeon MacPros, even the $3700 entry-level unit, are way too overpriced except for the competitive folks, of which Zombie is a "proud card-carrying member"... ;-)

@Zombie, all in fun... If I had the cash, I'd outperform ya...

In reality, I wouldn't be going for a Mac, but I'd probably get something similar on the PC side of things... although perhaps only a single quad...

@ Bikeman - TCO? Think ROI. I have a large need for a system that can run Vista with multiple VMware guest systems so that I can start getting "experience" in doing stuff on Linux, Solaris, and FreeBSD. It is the way of things. People want their "free" Open Source stuff. If I am going to remain in IT, then I'm going to have to compete with India, which means I'm going to need to know Java/Linux, some Oracle stuff, Websphere, Apache, mySQL, myPHP, etc... It's all the rage here... Once the outsourcing (err, "rightsourcing") goes bust, people will be looking for natives that can bail them out of the quagmire...

In the machine's "down time", it would crunch BOINC projects...

1. There is nothing similar on the PC side since the X5365 is only available with the MacPro.
2. Configure something "similar" (although slower) on e.g. www.alienware.com or www.dell.com and you will end up much(!) more expensive!
3. If you really cannot quit using WinDoze then install it on the MacPro. Since Apple switched to Intel it runs natively on the Mac, without emulation and even faster than on traditional Windoze machines.

What kind of BOINC projects need that much memory (even if there is one running per core)

Superlink@Technion have a minimum mem requirement of 700megs, so a gig/core would probably be a good idée for that project.
CPDN are working on new models that need 1.5-2 gigs, and higher resolution once that need 4.7 GB, if they find hosts that are willing to run them.

Then you're really interested in a subject, there is no way to avoid it. You have to read the Manual.

Psst... "In reality" = "not competition class"

53xx series Xeon systems are purely that, a splurge buy because one wants to compete. The processor shouldn't have even been mentioned here, as (sorry Zhang) my guess is that the equivalent amount of Renminbi required will be far beyond his reach...

1) For now, but in 3-6 months? Also my real "need" to compete with Zombie (or you) is somewhere on the order of 0%, as I do have the room on credit cards to buy 3 of what I posted, but the realization of how ridiculously overpriced your "bragging rights" systems are sinks in a bit...and the fact that I don't have a job...and the fact that I'd have the things repo'd from me when collections came... It all sorta loses its' luster...

2) Machines for my family, I'll buy from Dell, but I build my own.

3) Anyone who calls Windows "Windoze", loses my attention very quickly.

Yeah, yeah... Mac is superior. Linux is superior. How about the fact that what I wish to use is fine for me?

(yes, I get testy around zealotry, especially with lack of sleep)

BTW, my first computer, not counting the C=>64, had OS/2, which if it were compatible for what I need, I'd still be using it. Had IBM kept supporting it, it would have a larger share than Apple does...

Piece of advice: If you want to make "converts" out of people to ruin "the evil empire", it might behoove you to be a tad less "preachy". I can't stand zealots...

While there is no Xenon with the same specs as the mac pro, there is an Extreme edition quad at 2.93 GHz and an unlocked multi for some serious overclocking. Once Intel releases their V8 platform this will be a moot point.

Who in their right mind would build a system (this powerful) from either of these two companies when one could build it themselves for a fraction of the cost.

Or better yet, build two Q6600 systems for under $4000 and overclock them both to destroy any Xenon based system, single or dual socket configuration.

PROOF?

EDIT : I am no Intel or AMD fanboy, or a Mac hatter. I am simply a habitual tinkerer, and therefore could never see myself buying a Macintosh desktop.

There are 10^11 stars in the galaxy. That used to be a huge number. But it's only a hundred billion. It's less than the national deficit! We used to call them astronomical numbers. Now we should call them economical numbers. - Richard Feynman

Right. I built this machine back in march (2x X5355/4gb) for $3700 including tax and shipping. At this time, X5355s were $1,209 ea.. At the end of July, they will be $744 ea., and the X5365 will be $1172. I could have squeezed a few hundred more out of it by going with lower quality parts.

I know, nothing serious here. However, that dream machine you spec'd wouldn't be any faster than mine. I have 4gb, running BOINC on all 4 cores, and it's never gotten over 2gb usage. Perhaps if I was running 100% predictor, and if they were all on the same cycle where memory spiked at the same time across all tasks...

Duh. I meant "I have 4gb, running BOINC on all 8 cores, and it's never gotten over 2gb usage."
