Hi!

I'm thinking about replacing the Palomino AMD Athlon XP 1800+ in one of my hosts with a Geode NX CPU, mainly to bring down power consumption of the box (now ca. 145 Watts, > 60 Watts for the CPU alone, I guess.). Is it as easy as old CPU out, new one in?? Board is Asus A7M266. Would crunching performance scale with the clock speed compared to "ordinary" Athlon XPs or is the Geode crippled in any way that is relevant for crunching?

THX in advance

First question is:

Does your motherboard support that processor?

Check on the Asus website.

Happy crunchin',

Be aware that the Geode NX

Be aware that the Geode NX uses different modell numbers than the Athlon XP, e.g. the Geode NX 1750 has only 1,4 GHz clockspeed.

Yup, I know, but the max 25 W power consumption (compared to the ca 66 W for my current Athlon XP at 1,5 GHz) would be worth it. Other that for crunching, the box isn't used much but is running 24/7, 1.4 GHz would be more than adequate.

acording to wikipedia it has

acording to wikipedia it has sse1 and is 100% pincompatabile with socketA, so you should be good to go.

Now, THAT is INTERESTING.

That could well ressurrect a few old motherboards!

Keep searchin',

Thanks for the info. Here in

Thanks for the info. Here in Germany, I think every Watt of electrical power will cost about 1 or 1.5 EURO per year in 24/7 operation, so the Geode will pay for itself in no time :-). I think the total wattage of my BOINC fleet at home is around 300..400 Watts, so it does show on the monthly bill ...
