ARe you getting alot of

ARe you getting alot of Paging activity on the box? ie is the Hard disk on the machine very active?

you don't have alot of memory on that box (for running XP anyway) so you may be running into trouble with swap space.

Are your projects left in memeory when pre-empted? (general prefernces?) if yes, try setting it to no and updating. Also what is your 'switch applications evere xx mintes' set to?

note: I have obsereved that after you change your preferences, you may need to leave it a while before you update BOINC. They seem to take a while to filter through to the scheduler. (or whatever server it is that sends preferences to the client!!)

Paul.

Does it make a difference to leave a projekt in Memory, or not? It seems to load in nearly no time on switching?

It shouldn't make much of a

It shouldn't make much of a difference in performance. as you said - it loads very quickly anyway... thats my take on it anyway!

thing is, if you leave it in memory you will (obviously) use memory that would otherwise be free for your operating system. If you PC is low on memory, as in the case of Elealiu, then you could end up using your virtual memory (page file) alot more and this will slow down everything on your PC.

My setting had been on

Message 6711 in response to message 6707

My setting had been on leaving the projects in memory. I switched that over, so we'll see how it works out.
I have the switch set at 60 minutes. Do you think that should be increased or decreased?

There is penalty on switching between projects if you set to remove apps from memory. You can decrease this penalty (over a day or two) by increasing time between project switches to say 120 minutes. But the penalty is not really huge (depends on project itself, but I would imagine that it's something in order of 10 seconds), so there's no real need to fiddle with that setting too much.
Even if you set to leave applications in memory, you can be hit by the same problem if your physical RAM is not large enough and the non-active applications get swaped to page file by OS.
