Reading forums, it's hard to distinguish tone and nuance sometimes ...
Ha! Welcome to my world .... :-) :-)
The truth is that most traditional human communication is non-literal-language. All manner of body language and facial expressions, pace and voice inflection, pauses, are lost. Even silence can be deafening. So now this internet thingy comes along which channels or excludes or perverts those modes. Meanwhile ALL CAPS IS SEEN AS RUDE AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY, but smilies et al have been invented to display the facial mood indications. I use ellipses ( ..... ) to indicate either a pause or the trailing off of voice tone or volume, but I really don't know what others actually read in that. Then throw in that even English ain't so called English, especially in England where you can travel less that one hundred miles and change dialects sufficiently to get yourself in trouble without due care.
Crikey mate!! Then there's the Aussies, Wollongong can't be the real name of a town can it? Mind you the University does have a philosophy department but your name has to be Bruce to sign up for any of the courses.
