It's quiet here. I guess everyone is mulling over Mike's last post.
There is a demonstration against the BBC today that I was thinking of going on. They've refused to allow a charity appeal to help rebuild Gaza. It's horrific what was done to those civilians over there. So many families, woman and children were killed and the infrastructure has been destroyed. If help is not given it's going to become an even worse humanitarian disaster.
My heart go out to the people of Gaza.. I think It would be hard for the BBC to allow the charity appeal.. Internationally it might leave an impression that their is a bias in their objectivity.
George Mitchell has been appointed Mid East Envoy... Hopefully The US can now return to the position as the Honest Broker..

I hope you and your family are staying safe Mike.. If I know my geography those fire are very close to you..
Thank you Rod. We are all fine and have a house too. Missed us by 30 yards, it came through like a steam train, we had five minutes warning and jumped in the car and went. My neighbourhood looks like napalm hit it. So I'm emerging from that post near-death numbness/adrenaline slump, and my community needs me.
Mike.

Glad to hear Mike.. but I am sad for the loss of life and communities.. Things can be replaced... It will be amazing how fast your neighborhood will recover with new growth..

Alas, there are some unaccounted for ..... but matters are confused, and the fires still burn.
On the upside, we had this bloody big helicopter over our neignbourhood last night! 'Elvis' the orange skycrane was busy sucking out of the lake at the foot of our hill and dumping on some of the less accessible areas nearby. Wish we had another dozen. Outstandingly skillful and brave pilots. We were blacking out a paddock when it came along and all gave it a big round of applause with every splash - the pilot probably looked down and wondered why we were jumping up and down like idiots. Did six runs in 40 minutes. Amazing.
I used to do this sort of thing during summers in my youth and was able to direct a small ad-hoc crew. We haven't seen the fire brigade for days, as they are much busier elsewhere, so we are extinguishing the remains. We dropped a fence in several places to create direct paths for any/all into a very large thoroughly burnt paddock. This one wont burn twice, so if it gets squirrelly again we can bolt into the middle. We were black from tip to toe and went to bed exhausted.
It seems the key now is to suppress as much as possible this week as the conditions are milder. The focus is now to the north of the town ( Healesville, whereas Chum Creek where I live is to it's west ) where thankfully the Maroondah reservoir has halted the fire at it's edge. Unbelievably, there is strong evidence of arson as the prime cause of most of the fires, evil people who just wait for the right day .....
Thank you all for your heartfelt concern. My family and I are fine, but if you get the opportunity please assist others. I understand the Red Cross has something on the go .....
Cheers, Mike.
