WASHINGTON, D.C. - Scientists may not have to go over to the dark side to explain the fate of the universe.

The theory that the accelerated expansion of the universe is caused by mysterious "dark energy" is being challenged by New York University physicist Georgi Dvali. He thinks there's just a gravity leak.

Scientists have known since the 1920s that the universe is expanding. In the late 1990s, they realized that it is expanding at an ever-increasing pace. At a loss to explain the stunning discovery, cosmologists blamed it on dark energy, a newly coined term to describe the mysterious antigravity force apparently pushing galaxies outward.

Hi Ulli ,

thanks for posting this very good science report :)

there is __ so much science information __ getting reported so fast these days , it is difficult to keep up.

very best wishes to Ulli

It sounds like some more

It sounds like some more circumstantial evidence for strings (one more peice fits observations). For all the trouble in keeping up, IMO it's a great time to be watching all this unfold.

This is good stuff as all ways Ulli, please keep it coming. Maybe someday, I'll catch up to the curve, and I might even beat you to one of these.

This is just not right. If

This is just not right. If the gravity between two ojects moving apart disappeared it would simply no longer slow down their separation. The evidence shows an acceleration of expansion, not simply "not slowing down"

Well zero point energy and the casimir effect both play a major role in the expanding universe theory and thats where they come into play. Gravity is just a piece of the puzzle.

Dark energy... ^_^ im not

Dark energy...

^_^ im not really into science and space, its very interesting, and i understand alot of the scope of theories and that. My main interest is PC hardware ^_^

I never considered how the universe is expanding...now that i think about it, i dont want too. I spend sleepless nights trying to fathom infinity, lol

This doesn't eliminate dark

This doesn't eliminate dark energy, and is just misdirection. Maybe one can interpret it as a "fictitious" force, but there is still a force, and its energy, somewhere.
