i have no idea how much computing power they have, or how fast it would use up the battery. but they can play videos n stuff, and there are a whole lot of them. maybe future generations?

Probably not a good idea.

Probably not a good idea. One website (http://scoutingaround.com/computers/ipod/ipod_generations.php) listed a fifth generation video iPod as having a 80 MHz CPU with either 32 MB or 64 MB of RAM. It'd never finish a short WU in time.

Cool, what Linux are you running on those old timers?

The 486 has SuSE Linux 6.2.

The 486 has SuSE Linux 6.2.
Its primary job is doing IP-masquerading for my LAN.
The Pentium III has SuSE Linux 7.0 with an upgraded kernel.

I had to install a newer C-Library on both machines to make Einstein work.

My 400 MHz Pentium II with 320 MB Ram, SuSE Linux 10.1,completes one short WU in one day, while running QMC@home and SETI@home with lower priority. Bu I had to abandon bbc.climateprediction.net. No hope to meet its deadlines.

But if you look closely, you will notice it says: "CPU: PortalPlayer PP5021C with dual variable speed ARM7TDMI cores running up to 80Mhz". And I believe these are a bit stronger than say i486. So, I believe it could be quite a fun runnig E@H and/or some other project on it (primegrid with its short WUs comes first to my mind).

Maybe, I'm not having any

Maybe, I'm not having any luck googling up MFLOPs, or even MIPS numbers for any arm chips.

The 80mhz model isn't listed,

The 80mhz model isn't listed, but by interpolating from the 66 and 100mhz ones it looks like the 486-80 would get about 4-5mflops
http://netlib2.cs.utk.edu/performance/html/flops_1.data.col0.html (see also ..flops_2, flops_3, and flops_4 for different tests).

I still haven't found anything on the ARM7 FPU.

The Arm9 gets ~1FLOP/clock, the arm3 needs ~10clocks/flop.

I stand corrected. I didn't think that such a slow processor would finish within the 14 day limit. So processor speed and RAM won't preclude iPods. So it's really down to battery life as I figure that someone could create the needed modifications to BOINC. Does an iPod come with a power adapter and cord? I'm one of the few Mac fanatics that do not own an iPod, so I have no knowledge of what comes with an iPod.
