Hello,

Some members of our team have access to AIX-based servers. These machines can crunch quite a lot, but clients for this OS don't seem to exist.

They used to http://www.lb.shuttle.de/apastron/boincDown.shtml#aix
but they don't anymore due to the switch to boinc 5.x

If anyone can help, you are welcome.
If E@H dev team could release something, it would be greatly appreciated.

Last, if anyone knows about AIX based clients for any Boinc project, please let us know

Thanks

AIX clients : anything around ?

The AIX SETI@home port is in progress by Stefan.
So far I know is he very busy with other things in the moment. But I will ask him about the state.

acording to boincstats

acording to boincstats there're only 101 AIX machines across all projects, so understandably ports are a very low official priority.

@ Dotsch : Thanks

@ DanNeely : you are right.
But these 100 machines can do a lot. Official clients could bring new ones.
Of course, it is not like windows / linux - based machines that count in thousands, but the project that would release such an AIX client would probably get these 100 machines (and most probably the rest of the farms managed by the owner)

The ports of the boinc client for all the other OSes are not made by berkeley. They where all made by volunteers.
Berkeley only made the Windows, Linux, Mac and Solaris boinc clients.

I think, it would be great, if the other Unixes (HPUX, Irix,..) will be supported by einstein, too.

For example, the 171 HPUX systems at SETI has the same RAC like 1598 FreeBSD systems, or 4158 Windows XP systems.
As there was an SETI App for AIX available, the AIX and IRIX systems had also a very good RAC, comparable with the throughput in the comparsion above.

Totally agree with you

Please keep us informed about Stefan's work

Einstein is a closed source

Einstein is a closed source software, so only the developers develop for machines they have/can test on. So, in order for Einstein to be ported over to things, they would need machines, and people who understood the various coding differences to sit and write. Then testing to make sure the results are going to be precice enough. This takes a lot of time and money, which the developers do not have.

I am not saying it's not a good idea to include systems that are not included now. I think the more crunchers, the better. Just I understand that the project has limits in it's abilities.

We're currently testing a

We're currently testing a Client and E@H App for IRIX 6.5. I'll publish it if the test is satisfying.

Edit: our IRIX machines are pretty slow (O2 and Indigo2), so the testing may take a while ;-)

Great. Thank you very much.

Bernd, did the project plan to made the app for HPUX and AIX, too ?

There are no plans to extend the range of official platforms (Windows, Linux, MacOS, Solaris SPARC) any further in the future.

Any other platforms that may show up (this already includes FreeBSD) are mostly free-time fun of the project developers, which we do when we have really free time and a (real or virtual) machine with a suitable development environment available. Support of any kind (updates, optimization, installation support) is limited to the time we have left over from the "official" project (and the fun we have with these exotic machines).

IRIX came up because there are two of us who really like their sgis, and would love to see these doing something useful. I don't have access to a HPUX or AIX machine at all, and I doubt that anyone else of the project team has. We have some DEC Alpha machines lying around here - if I have some more time I'll set up one or two and make an App for Linux and/or OSF/True64. But don't ask me for a timescale.

Are these pSeries machines? Could you create a Linux partition and run BOINC there?
