I've been reading a lot on people having trouble with reaching thier maximum WU qouta of 32, and not having enough work to keep their machines running around the clock. While my 3700+ is not nearly as fast as the multiple core processors out there, it still goes through more than 32 WUs a day, yet I haven't run out of work to crunch. I believe the reason for this is because I connected this computer to the project late in the day and was able to download 32 WUs, then, when the day changed (different local time for everyone because of time zones) I was able to download 32 more WUs to have a total of 64 to work on.
I will eventually run out of work because I am crunching more than I'm downloading, but this has given me a nice head start so I don't have to disconnect and reconnect each day.

A thought on WU quota

The quota is 32 per cpu, so the dual cores would get 64 WU. My dual core has never ran out of work, but a couple of my athlon xp's have from time to time. No big deal, either attach to another project or let them rest a few hours.

I think the problem is that the WUs are too short. With short work units some run into the 32 WU/day limit and the workload on the servers must be high. In my case there is the additional problem of being on dialup. The size of the short WU results files are almost as big as the long WUs. So upload time is a big factor for me. I have one computer that has run over 50 WUs in one day and at 1 1/2 minute per up load that is over 1 hour of uploading time. All three problem would be solved with the use of longer WUs.

>What you say is quite accurate, Terry. However the reality is that we don't want to waste electricity by letting machines sit idle so we have a backup project as you suggest. You would think the processing loss to E@H should be of some concern. This loss will accelerate as more machines run Akosf optimised apps, official or otherwise. If you get a data set with these short WUs, they process in about eight minutes. So, IMHO, the easiest solution is to raise the MDQ to at least 64(2x} to try and match the increase in productivity(4x+)....Cheers, Rog.

Bad news - speed of 45

Bad news - speed of 45 minutes per 'long' WU with latest akosf D41 app gives exactly 32WU/day/core on my AMD X2 4400+ which makes my machine to meet daily quota and get dry on Einstein.

Please, consider some action about setting quota...soon.

Ah, yeah. This seems pretty ridiculous. There's a big push to sign up more computers to get the work done, however, the available processing power isn't being used.

Right now it's about 12:30 CDT and I'm shutting down two computers due to WU quotas...

or try boinc studio - it is a optimized boinc manager where you can adjust the number of your CPUs up to 8 - so you will get 128 WUs / day. try it. check this thread: http://einsteinathome.org/node/191137

The problem with attaching to other projects is that you can inadvertantly lose E@H productivity doing this. I've had several instances where the computer queries the server and is told that the quota is met. After several attempts of this, the length of time for "deferred communication" can reach up to 12 hours, during which 11 of those might be the next "day" for quota, so the computer is actually idle for E@H purposes when it could've been crunching.

Is it BOINC's code or Einstein's that sets the "deferred communications" parameters? My point of the previous post was that there are other projects that use BOINC, so that one doesn't have to shut down the computers.

It's almost correct but a bit ridiculous - 32*8 an't 128. But 32*4 is 128.
I used BS in order to make the queue full - but 128WUs were completed in less than 2 days even I got all of them long.
Fast machines can do 80 long WUs per day, really fast like FX-60 can do 100 I believe. If 30 of them are short, you get dry even with 128 WUs per dual-core machine.
