There are some fairly good

There are some fairly good remixes of the older new songs, or newer old ones; found this one, of my favorite INXS song.

Speaking of new, nice avatar, Es. Did the Captain help with that? And @ MICHAEL: how are you coming along with your choosing an avatar?

Yeah, that is my favorite of theirs too. I like the original better, some remixes are too long for me for just listening. Good dance remix though. It's a shame about the original singer; I remember them being popular in high school. Thanx for reminding me of how old I am. Now feeling the urge to wear stone/white washed 501 jeans. And white hightops.....lol

Thank you for the music.

Thank you for the music. Actually enjoyed it. I think I will have to devote more time to the avatar issue. . .

Speaking of music (new and

Speaking of music (new and old), isn't it a mysterious thing? Every now and then a new song comes out, unlike most others, that seems to induce profound physiological reactions on very deep levels; makes your hair bristle, gives you goose bumps, fills you with warm tingley feelings, whatever.

I'd ask if others experience similar sensations, but it's obviously the case; some time ago, a famous gymnast (or figure skater?) was pulled over for driving down the Pacific Coast Highway at speeds well above the posted limit, and the first question they asked her, of course, was had she been drinking. Not at all: the radio station she was listening to was playing one of her favorite Madonna tunes!

There are some who would argue that all the songs that can be composed, already have been; based on the finite number of notes the human ear can hear, and the combinations they can be arranged in, further constrained by the fact that only certain specific combinations “sound good. Diminish it further with a complex explanation of resonance, harmonics, and constructive interference between auditory input and biological metabolisms...

But I don't think that's all the maths there are for music. I think the maths for music are more quantum mechanical in nature, not that I have an understanding of quantum mechanics; but in consideration of it, I think music is all one song, like a flowering vine. Some of the blossoms never fade, but the vine grows in time and new blossoms continuously bloom.

A good contemporary case in point, and for me well up there in the 'tingley feeling' department, is this song by the Verve: Bittersweet Symphony (Probably not the best mp3, sounds like the rec levels were too high)

So what really is music?

Music is mathematics for the soul
Mathematics is music for the soul

Mathematics and music commute, that is they form an Abelian algebra

Chipper, your comments about

Chipper, your comments about music resonate in me. That is not intended as a play on words, it is true. The old shibboleth, "Music will sooth the savage beast." Is, I believe, an accurate statement. In addition to practicing law and teaching law, I donate my time teaching at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles. I teach high school students opera, mostly.

Rather than making it an abstract, our lesson plans are usually good enough to win free tickets for the students to attend an opera at the opera house (Dorothy Chandler Pavillion). What I have observed, irrespective of nationality (Hollywood High is now a school primarily composed of immigrants from Armenia, Mexico, Central and South America) is that music is a common language and that playing Bach, cello music, soothing music, tends to calm the students, help them study better and creates a more peaceful environment.

For the most part, the students are not from families that have had any formal music education, and for many, they are the first generation to even attend high school...

It is amazing what music does... It is not a matter of "mere" mathematics, there are harmonic sounds, that resonate deep within a person, some would call it their soul. . . I have seen this over and over. To see the rapture on a teenager's face when hearing Un Bel Dia, or Pavane Pour Une Infante for the first time...

This is weird, I could have

This is weird, I could have sworn I posted a response to Chipper last night, but it seems to be gone.

Possible explanations:

1) Big foot stole my post
2) Aliens did it
3) It was deleted by moderators as offensive
4) I was so tired I posted it somewhere else
5) I was so tired I forgot to hit the "Post reply" button.
6) I dreamt the whole thing.

BTW, Chipper, Bittersweet

BTW, Chipper, Bittersweet Symphony, an interesting melding of Bob Dylan meeting Gorecki's "Sorrowful Symphony."

@Es: I think you need more sleep, I don't think Ovalteen will do it.

It was a good post, I complimented you and Chipper on your taste in music. Made a remark on how some of Beethoven's later piano stuff bordered on jazz and suggested a short story by Arthur C. Clark on the ultimate melody.
