They are used for "bragging rights", showing your progress and by the validator to check if the result falls within the consensus. But other than that, they are quite useless in the material world. You cannot use them, trade them, buy beer with them or increase your points on your drivers license with them.

Hi there, I'm kind of a newbie at the whole Boinc process too (signed up today), but was also curious about the credits too. I came across these posts and it occurred to me that a ‘scheme’ whereby credits were, at least, worth collecting would contribute to 1) the "bragging rights", and 2) user motivation in order to acquire higher levels of processing.

For example, if a user were to receive electronic certificates (printable - maybe of PDF format) claiming their current achievement (every 10,000 or so credits – whatever would be deemed a fair sum of credits). This, I believe, could be automated through by simple means, and would give the user something to prove their involvement.

Would you agree? Would this be feasible, do you know? …?

SETI@home offers certificates showing a user's current credit, regardless of 'milestones', here. They even sell frames for them. The "Classic" (pre-BOINC) version was more like your suggestion, with specific certificates for e.g. 1000, 5000, 10000 WUs completed. IIRC the earliest versions were in PDF, but they switched to JPEGs at some point. Still, they seem to have reasonably high resolution and gentle compression (I haven't actually printed one out, but they look OK on screen.)

Hector, why not use a little

Hector, why not use a little "cut & paste" and make your own "Certificate of Achievement" whenever you want one to hang on the wall. a little shot at humor ....Stan
