Success is counted sweetest

Success is counted sweetest
By those who never succeed
To comprehend a nectare
Requests the sorest need
And none of the purple host
Who took the field today
Can tell the definition,
So clear, of victory
As he...

My memory fails. Help!

Their height in heaven

Their height in heaven comforts not,
Their glory nought to me;
"Twas best imperfect, as it was;
I'm finite,I can't see.

The house of supposition,
The glimmering frontier
That skirts the acres of perhaps,
To me shows insecure.

The wealth I had contented me;
If 'twas a meaner size,
Then I had counted it until
It pleased my narrow eyes

Better than larger values,
However true their show;
This timid life of evidence
Keeps pleading, "I don't know."

Contained in this short

Contained in this short Life
Are magical extents
The soul returning soft at night
To steal securer thence
As Children strictest kept
Turn soonest to the sea
Whose nameless Fathoms slink away
Beside infinity

The Brain -- is wider than

The Brain -- is wider than the Sky --
For -- put them side by side --
The one the other will contain
With ease -- and You -- beside --

The Brain is deeper than the sea --
For -- hold them -- Blue to Blue --
The one the other will absorb --
As Sponges -- Buckets -- do --

The Brain is just the weight of God --
For -- Heft them -- Pound for Pound --
And they will differ -- if they do --
As Syllable from Sound -

He ate and drank the precious

He ate and drank the precious words,
His spirit grew robust,
He knew no more that he was poor,
Nor that his frame was dust.
He danced along the dingy days,
And this bequest of wings,
Was but a book. What liberty
A loosened spirit brings!

This is from memory(so a few

This is from memory(so a few words may be wrong) - I learned it in high school nearly twenty years ago. ;)

Of all the souls that stand create
I have elected one
When sense from spirit files away
And subterfuge is done

When that which is and that which was
Apart intrinsic stand
And this brief tragedy of the flesh
Is shifted like a sand

When figures show their royal fronts
And mists are carved away
Behold the one that I prefer
To all the lists of clay.

Nature - sometimes sears a Sapling -
Sometimes - scalps a Tree -
Her Green People recollect it
When they do not die -

Fainter Leaves - to Further Seasons -
Dumbly testify -
We - who have the Souls -
Die oftener - Not so vitally -

A Rat surrendered here A

A Rat surrendered here
A brief career of Cheer
And Fraud and Fear.

Of Ignominy's due
Let all addicted to
Beware.

The most obliging Trap
Its tendency to snap
Cannot resist --

Temptation is the Friend
Repugnantly resigned
At last.

Estranged from Beauty - none

Estranged from Beauty - none can be -
For Beauty is Infinity -
And power to be finite ceased
Before Identity was leased.

GLEE! the great storm is

GLEE! the great storm is over!
Four have recovered the land;
Forty gone down together
Into the boiling sand.

Ring, for the scant salvation!
Toll, for the bonnie souls, -
Neighbor and friend and bridegroom,
Spinning upon the shoals!

How they will tell the shipwreck
When winter shakes the door,
Till the children ask, "But the forty?
Did they come back no more?"

Then a silence suffuses the story,
And a softness the teller's eye;
And the children no further question,
And only the waves reply.
