Missing hosts file

I seem to have lost the hosts file for einstein@home. This is on a win10 system (my B550-EWin10). This happened just this morning, and the only hosts files that I can find on my machine are dated 2015 and 2019, long before I  switched over from Seti. So I  am not sure what  ip addresses and sys names to use. Could someone please respond with the text of theirs so that I can copy yours to my system? Is that doable?

On the win10 system, the hosts file is in some form of binary, as opposed to on my win 7 system, where it is in clear text (with no uncomment entries in the file). What does this mean?

Where on your pc is it supposed to be? I find some "...hosts.exe" files but they are in the Windows directory not the Boinc directories

I don't know why you need

I don't know why you need some hosts file specific for einstein@home. Hosts files are used to e.g. manually configure local DNS names for local IP addresses or names for public IP adresses which have no DNS entry.

This is from my old Win 7 machine, from: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts   It's empty.

I have exactly the same file ( dated 2019 ) on my Windows 10 machine, and from the same directory. I think the clue is in the comment :

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

... so maybe this is some retro/superceded/fallback feature ie. a capability used in the early days of the internet, typically not relevant anymore. It's essentially domain_name<->IP_address resolution before there were DNS servers. A little research reveals :

"However, if you already know the IP address for a URL, you can add the details to the host file and your PC will use it without consulting a DNS server or the cache"

and

"Why Should You Edit the Hosts File?

The hosts file is edited for several reasons, but you typically want to do so for one of two uses.

First, the hosts file is handy if your DNS server is not working efficiently. If your DNS server is working slowly, you can insert the IP address and domain name in the hosts file to speed up the searching process (if you know all the details).

Conversely, you can use the hosts tile to block a PC from accessing a website. Since the hosts file is the first port of call for a PC, you can enter an invalid address for the targeted site to stop your PC from accessing it."

Now that I know where to look I have one too and it's exactly the same as yours is and I have Wind 11 Home

I changed all my pc to use CloudFlare as my DNS provider but was using Google in the past, CloudFlare is supposed to be a bit faster and doesn't track as much but not being one of those guys that can test all that I don't really know. Here is a short list of some free DNS Servers:

WELL, IF i reboot my machine,

WELL, IF i reboot my machine, things seem ok for a few minutes and I recover all the data that was locked in to my machine. But then the same thing recurs, and I get (from BOINC  Event Log):

and that last is BOINC-only, as my browsers still work OK. Why is it just BOINC that decides it needs a HOSTS file?

this is likely a DNS

this is likely a DNS problem.

are you running something like PiHole at your house? are you running some other DNS setup on your network? what DNS are you using?

Wouldn't that happen for all internet accesses on that machine?  I looked in "View Hardware and Connection Properties" and it shows 192.168.1.1 (my router) If it matters, it is an Orbi RBR50, it is wifi access, and nothing else on any of my machines seems to have a problem with it?????

what DNS is your router using? have you configured anything like port blocking on the router? are you using a proxy or anything in BOINC?

My logs are similar to that except mine seems to use World community Grid unless I keep clicking update and it finally switches over to the Project I'm trying to connect to, my problem is the lousy connection from my internet provider, they fix it one day and everything is lightning fast and then the next day it's back to the slow speed it was the day before and my logs show essentially the same things your does. I finally get angry enough to call Tech Support at my internet provider they fix it and boom I'm back to lightning fast again. apparently someone keeps undoing whatever the 'fix' is and I suffer because of it. And YES I get the exact same "can't resolve host name" thing all the time inbetween 'fixes'. My pc constantly says 'connection try timed out' so somewhere there's a timer that tells my browser to stop trying because the connection isn't available, but if I click to retry a few times it works again. I use Cloudflare as my DNS provider instead of my internet providers site as theirs is REALLY REALLY slow.

1. I don't know what DNS my provider (Astound/RCN) gives me. I will call tech support tomorrow to see what they say.

2. No port blocking by me.

3. No proxy either.

Maybe this is a win 10 problem, because all my 10 or so previous BOINC machines were win 7? If so, where should I look?
