Good Morning Keith, Chipper,

Good Morning Keith, Chipper, Misfit, Dan, Kathryn, Ariane and Michael..goodness, this threads been busy since I last popped in...must be the tea ;-)

I'm feeling a little delicate today, was out celebrating the end of term last night.. no more teaching for 2 whole weeks! Yes!

So I'll brew a fresh pot of tea and put the coffee on and I'll be ok as long as everybody keeps the noise down.

Chipper, that article does look interesting..oh..my head..it's too early to think about P-branes or M-branes. ;-)

Can we assume that aliens even have mathematics and have a value for pi? Perhaps they never got as far as inventing the 'number' zero. I think you assume that we've even invented all the maths there is, and I use the word invented here quite deliberately!

I can see Ariane's point about the non-existence of time. We consider time a 4th dimension, yet we can only move in one direction in it. I seem to remember that the possibility of time travel has been disproved - again using mathematics - so I guess that is not going to change for us. But it does make you wonder what time really is. We can define the direction based on the law of increasing entropy, but that doesn't tell us it's true nature. Sorry I'm rambling here, I'll shut up now.

The title of this thread seems quite appropriate to me. I don't see any reason to correct the spelling. It fits in with the whole Cafe Einstein zeitgeist :-)

Kathryn, I so understand what you mean about sweets. My weakness is chocolate. I bought a large box to give out to my class and accidentally ate most of them. Now I try not to bring the stuff into the house, or even go down that aisle in the supermarket! So if you manage to make you're Little Debbies last you're a stronger woman than I am.

..I'm still rambling aren't I?

Physics is for gurls!

They are gone! My grand plan lasted only so long. Then my sweet tooth kicked in. The rest of the sweets in the box are well hidden now. Hopefully they'll stick around until the next box from home.

Kathryn :o)

I feel need for one cup of nice, hot coffee. I'll just make it one cup, sit in front of my computer and enjoy reading this forum for a while. After that some reading, and then probably some movie. I like this Einstein Cafe!

Hi, Es99. I think if any aliens exist, and if they've evolved to the point where their knuckles stopped dragging, then they have most likely discovered the value for pi. I certainly don't think that we have discovered everything there is to know about maths. I think our knuckles are still dragging in some respects. And I use the word discovered here with confidence, and italics. :-P So do we discover maths or do we invent maths? Doesn't the essence of nothing precede the realization of zero?

You do realise that the concepts of knuckle-dragging, pi and zeo are intertwined in the fabric of space-time. Consider this; when you stop dragging your knuckles, you are then free to eat the pi and end up with zero. Converting the pi's mass to energy, you are then free to drag knuckles in search of another pi.

ps Prefer my coffee in a tin cup, handle wont break as I drag in along in search of a nice pi

-ROFL- Thanks Robert.
That was rather my point, concerning the value of pi, especially banana cream, which certainly doesn't grow on trees, at least the cream part... and if you have to divide it evenly so everyone in the cafe gets a piece, knowing the value sure comes in handy for the baker. Strange that some numbers materialize with prominence. Like the value of how fast I could possibly drag my knuckles looking for more. :) Where does the magnitude for c come from? Is it wasting perfectly good screen ink to suggest that constants from maths are intertwined with those from physics?
-edit- Es99, just saw your Xmas card. It's superb! Are those young physicists in the band?

mmm banana cream pi...but Chipper, you assumed that the aliens will have knuckles! I know what you mean about mathematical constants. It's obvious to us, but who knows how an alien consciousness will perceive the world, what their science will be, what their maths will be. We can't guess cos we got human minds and we like pi.

Thanks Chipper, :-) I still think your one is the best, but I had to try!

In the band are Bohr, Dirac, Einstein, Heisenberg, Feyman and Schrödinger.
