Okay, I think it may have been the unit of work that was causing the problems. I aborted it, and a new unit uploaded. Now, everything is working as it should, so far.
Einstein suddenly stopped working on Aug 18, 2007. The screen saver stopped working and the laptop shut down. I haven't lost connection to Internet all else works fine. Einstein status shows it has not stopped working. My screen shows 'BOINC is idle' when I am not actively using laptop. 'Show graphics', 'Suspend' and 'Abort' are not available for use. Last message was on Aug 19 says 'server got msg to delete file....'. An earlier message stated there wasn't enough space allocated. I haven't experienced this issue before. Running Windows XP Professional.

According to the scheduler log, you've got less than 10 GB free on your disk, but you configured BOINC/Einstein@Home to leave at least 10 GB free. So if you provide more free space on the disk where BOINC is installed and then press UPDATE, you will get new work.

I upped my allocation to 20GB and 50% of memory but that is useless if there is no space available. I got a dialog msg saying I need to connect to the Internet or under Tools, Options, Advanced I need to specify a default connection. Went there but there I am clueless as to what default connection. Since I am on Cox Cable my Internet connection is always on.

The BOINC Manager "Disk" tab will show you how much space Einstein is using. I doubt that it is as much as you think. Your best option for fixing the situation is probably to allow BOINC to use a higher percentage of available disk space. That is, change the "Use no more than" preference to something higher than 50%. (FYI: I use 80%.) This will allow BOINC more flexibility to temporarily use your available space but it probably won't effect other operations.
After some time I came back to see the if new Boinc version solved the blankscreen issue (I was one of the old posters on this thread).
Unfortunately nothing changed for my WinXP Pro SP2 running on a Centrino Duo T7200 @2.0 GHz 1GB DDR2@533 MHz, but ...
...but casually once I left the screensaver in a paswwd-unlocked mode (i.e. do not prompt for psswd on screensaver) and bingo!! the constellation appeared!!
I tried it many times and if I check the psswd or force the win+L option only the blankscreen appears; if no password is requested then the constellation apperars, althought the orange viewpoint (the one that shows the spatial coords that are being worked out) does not move (maybe because on the dual core there are two different jobs on two different spatial locations running at the same time), but the percentage grows, so actually the computation takes place.
There are differences between asking for a psswd or not on the graphical aspect of WinXP when resuming the session, and I guess this is the key to the Boinc missbehaviour.
Well, that's it. I do not feel comfortable to leave the laptop without a psswd; this joined to the more demanding specs of disk storage of the project (Boinc people,if I give my laptop idle-time for FREE to get yourself a profit do not ask us for more disk space, memory or whatever without reverting something on us!!!) make me think of leaving it again on stand-by and coming later to check out new versions...
