Attached to project twice?

I got the following message in my boincmgr notices:

"You are attached to this project twice. Please remove projects named Einstein@Home, then add https://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/"

I never did anything to make that happen. I have no idea why I'm getting that message.

In the meantime, everything appears to be crunching normally.

I don't know what to do. I can see how to remove the project from boincmgr, but I don't know how to add it back given that URL. When I go to the URL, I get my normal home account page.

Whatever I need to do, I don't want to lose the 2.9 million credits I've accumulated!

What should I do about this, and how should I do it?

TIA

Gordon

They just updated the Project to use HTTPS instead of HTTP so you should get the message that you need to remove and then readd the project BUT if you do it while you have any tasks on your pc they will be lost so you may wish to set it to No new Tasks first. You are using Boinc version 7.18.1 but if you were using version 7.20.0 or higher it would automatically change it for you with not detaching and reattaching needed.

As for you really having 2 versions of Einstein loaded I don't know how that's possible as if you try to readd an existing project it says it's 'already loaded' and won't reload the project.

Don't do anything except read the announcement in Technical News.

Once you've digested that, your simplest action should be to upgrade BOINC to 7.16.20 or later if you have a version earlier than that.

Cheers,
Gary.

Sorry to ask what might be

Sorry to ask what might be silly questions, but I don't understand some stuff. I just downloaded BOINC, joined a couple of projects and then stand back to watch it run. I've never messed with any local BOINC management stuff at all.

Help -> About BOINC Manager says it's version 7.18.1. Does that mean the client is also 7.18,1?

If I want to upgrade BOINC, how do I go about it without losing my credits? I find directions on how to do a new install but not an upgrade.

TIA

The client and the manager are two separate programs.  It is possible to run different versions of these but it would require deliberate action from you so you would know about it :-).  I just checked your host details on the website and it shows there a client version of 7.18.1.  All I can suggest is that perhaps the information in the announcement in Tech News about an automatic fix for versions above 7.16.20 is not correct.  Perhaps 7.18.1 was an early release, prior to the 7.16.20 fix.  I simply don't know.

However, you can easily fix this yourself without upgrading BOINC.  Just stop the client and then edit the two files that contain the master_url definition.  I gave the full details of what worked for me in the TECH News thread.

Your credit records are on the website so you can't really lose them.  I don't use Ubuntu so I don't know the specifics of how upgrades are handled.  There are plenty of Ubuntu users that are active on the boards so hopefully one of them can reassure you.  If I were you, I'd just correct the master_url and stay with what you have.

Cheers,
Gary.
