Thanks, i'll try the

Thanks,

i'll try the books. Since i have no extra monitor and this is my only working computer in the moment it wouldn't be practical to let my computer stand on the side.

And you are right this is no power efficient notebook: even the power supply has a fan(and that beats the sound intensity of some desktops:-)

So i'll just wait for my desktop(if i ever get the money from my scholarship)

thanks for the answers

You can't just tilt your head sideways to read it? :-) Isn't it worth SOME sacrifice to be able to BOINC?

Seriously... I had heat problems with my laptop as well, tried everything I could think of, including propping it at different angles, while monitoring the temps with a utility program. Opening the tray-load CD drive helped the most, but still not quite enough. I found a USD$25 "laptop cooler", a cheap plastic gizmo with three fans that is powered by the USB port on the laptop, and sits underneath it. It dropped the temp by about 5 F, which, combined with leaving the CD tray open, solved my problem...

Another cruncher said he uses

Another cruncher said he uses one of those kitchen, cake cooling grids to stand his laptop on, to aid the cooling, very cheap too.

Thanks but leaving the cd

Thanks but leaving the cd tray open is not really an option :) The lens would get all dusty and the drive has problems reading some disks even without the dust. I'll go with the books *g

There is a pretty cheap set

There is a pretty cheap set of fans that plug in via USB for laptops. I got them and they seem to help.

Also, keep it clean of dust bunnies! My laptop was shutting itself off multiple times a day because of the dust bunnies. It was also running a lot slower. Now that it's all clean, it's running nice, again.

Hello Something you

Hello

Something you mentioned that you run - Tea-timer. Spybot is pretty good for a freeware app, but I am sure that I read someplace that having Tea-timer going impacts on the crunching. As an experiment, do a benchmark once or twice and copy the results to notepad and save someplace, then disable tea-timer and reboot. Than do a bench mark once or twice again - is there any improvement ? Also what antivirus do you use ? Nortons is good but well known for slowing down your PC - AVG has a free version you could try - which is not a bad antivirus either. I use NOD32 myself, which is even lighter on resources, but you will need to pay for it. And if you go into start/run and type msconfig what shows up under the startup tab ? I have the nvidia card driver, zonealarm and antivirus. You might also want to look at what services you have running - before BOINC fires up I have 18 services (inclusive of zonealarm, antivirus + nvidia)

hope this is of help

I'll try without tea-timer.

I'll try without tea-timer. What kind of benchmark do you mean. There is some kind of built in benchmark, right? but how do you start that?
Or do you mean an external app?

I use AVG(since it is free and working nicely)

thanks

In the Manager window, on the "Commands" tab, "Run benchmarks". 8-)
(edit) takes a minute or two to complete them

If you're referring to me, I'm a she, and if you have an IKEA near you, I strongly suggest their cookie cooler, as it's very sturdy. I run my Pentium 4 laptop 24/7 and it never gets above about 52C (currently 45C).

Another thing to look into is cleaning fans and your air intake areas, as dust can prevent proper cooling and is actaully a fire hazard.

I have started using a couple

I have started using a couple of sections of rail from an old Alasken railroad as stand offs. Not a readily available as IKEA gear but they have the same effect. The main thing is to insure good air curculation and keep the entry/exit port clean and unobstructed.
