Topic 226226

I'd not seen a non GPU work unit for a VERY long time, but today, I found one of my machines had two such items. One, is 1.350% done and has an elapsed of 03:05:41, its remaining is 9d 10:09:12 increasing rapidly. The other shows 1.500% done, has 03:13:13 elapsed and 8d 19:28:52 remaining, increasing rapidly. Both units are suspended at the moment. Is this typical or normal for CPU tasks now?

Einstein apps run really well

Einstein apps run really well on GPUs both AMD and NVidia on the order of 20x faster.  You might consider using your CPU resources on projects that do not have the funding or know how to develop GPU apps.  WCG have several excellent projects and their COVID modeling take 3-4 hours at most on a CPU.

I know, I don't know why

I know, I don't know why these work units arrived, but they did, and started running some time during the night. As I mentioned, it is so long since I've had one, I wanted to check on current units behaviour. Since my original post, I found another such work unit, also 3 hours in now, and remaining time increasing wildly. My actual question was, is that normal for todays CPU units?

I have several CPU only projects in the portfolios of my machines, I think Rosetta is on all of them for example. SiDock and TN on several. wcg is moving, and not issuing work at the moment it would seem.

There is probably a problem

There is probably a problem with your computer as it seems that it has created a new identity for itself. A new computer has appeared on 15th of October that is similar than the other one. It is most likely using now a different venue which has CPU tasks enabled. Check what changed on Friday and if the set-up is what you'd expect it to be.

It is not a new computer, it

It is not a new computer, it is exactly the same one. I installed a new SSD in my machine, and wanted to move a few things to it. BOINC was one of them, and the easiest way of acheiving that was to set no new tasks on all projects, when the machine was idle, let BOINC delete itself, and then reinstall it on the new F: drive. I figured this was an easy option, I've discovered it is not, it should be, but no. This issue here is ANOTHER one to address. It would be nice if just adding the projects from my old list was simply a case of  pressing the "Hey join me" poke points on their "welcome to our friendly and easy home pages".....

You might consider using windows 10 "location" property to move stuff to another drive.  I did that for a while when I had a small SSD for the C drive.  Only a few folders support the "location" property and neither ProgramData nor ProgramData\Boinc have that property

Something like the following might work (I have never tried this and dont intend to) but I have read that it solved problems with the C drive running out of space.  I assume the problem is the size of all the project files in the Boinc data directory.

mkdir D:\ProgramData
robocopy /XJ /MIR "C:\ProgramData" "D:\ProgramData"
mklink /J "C:\ProgramData" "D:\ProgramData"

I would ask over at the Berkeley Boinc forum on how to move the data files to another drive.

You can use the projects "merge" command to consolidate statistics on your "new" system.

Another possible solution is

Another possible solution is reset the project.

Uninstall boinc.

Install boinc using the custom location to set it up on the HDD.

Merge all versions of the system listed on your website profile.

Review review computer profile setting to make sure using CPU is disabled.

Make sure THIS setting is set to no:

Allow non-preferred apps:
yes

no

If no work for selected applications are available, accept tasks from other applications?

It's on this page under Other Settings:

I think all is sorted now.

I think all is sorted now. Getting BOINC over to the F: drive was easy enough, but the projects took a while to get back into their old running state.

The link in my sig should take you to the home page of boincdenmark, which USED to be my teams home page, with our forum and stats pages. Like other teams, everything was organised as a loosely linked group of individuals.. The team had a captain, Kirsten. I simply wrote software. It was hosted by another team member. All was good until one day, it vanished. The guy hosting it left without warning, and took everything with him. It, now, seems to be a travelers guide to Holland. I am trying to get control of it back, the name at least, where I live now, I cannot host the site.
