Hello, I'm currently

Hello,

I'm currently processing data from the LIGO O1 data set, and Gamma-ray pulsar binary search #1. In both cases "Show graphics" is greyed out. Is this supposed to be the case? I have GTX 1060 running the driver from Dec 2018 on a Windows 10 machine.

Thank you

I just love this project. I

I just love this project. I have it running on 2 Windows 10 home edition notebooks. I recently resurrected an older Acer Aspire 7730Z notebook with a new HD. I have always wanted to experience a Linux distro and here was my chance! I experimented with several flavors and settled on Astronomy Linux running Ubuntu 18.4.

Now, I have all of my astro gear operational and several additional astronomy software packages that came pre installed.

Then I remembered BONIC and Einstein@Home running on my Windows notebooks. So, I downloaded BOINC for Linux and added Einstein@Home project.

It was a breeze installing the BOINC client following my copy, paste and run instructions in a terminal window. Einstein@Home is running in the background. However, I can not get the screensaver to work. I have checked to see if I have X11 installed which I already had with the OS install. I checked to see if I had open GL installed. I did not so following the instructions I copied, pasted and run the install in my terminal window.

No luck. When I select one of the running apps and click on show graphics tab nothing appears to happen.

Other items considered such as Intel graphics card, RAM, Disc space, etc. It appears these basics are good to go.

So, what am I missing? Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks!

Hi Everyone, I just hate

Hi Everyone,

I just hate to keep reporting problems with this screensaver issues. It seems like every time I do an update to my computer Ubuntu 20.10 OS, either the software or the screensaver fails.

I completed an OS update this morning. I reinstalled Boinc and attached my einstein@home account. I also had to perform a command line start to the client software which was successful. I then opened Boinc and began processing the units successfully. The show graphics button is NOT greyed out but nothing happens when I push it, that being no screensaver.

Here are my computers specifics;

An HP Pavilion notebook computer

6 GiB

AMD A6-6310 apu with amd radeon r4 graphics x 4

1.0 TB HD

Ulbuntu 21.10 64 bit

GNOME Version 40.4.0

Windowing System X11

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated,

Regards,

John

It *probably* failed to

It *probably* failed to create a context ie. an instance of the OpenGL state machine. Two reasons I can think of are :

- the video driver is faulty in it's OpenGL support

- the video driver isn't faulty in it's OpenGL support but does not do 'legacy' contexts which is required for the screensaver IIRC

In the directory from which the screensaver is run there ought be some debug output in a file : I can't remember the exact filename but it will no doubt be something obvious like 'stderr.txt' which is time-stamped so just open it and read what it says. Even better, copy and paste and show it's contents for us here.

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) 'stderrgfx.txt' on my machine

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

Just a thought...

WHICH OS do you have, Ubuntu 20.10 or 21.10?

If you're running 21.10, you might try reverting back to 20.10.  I have been reading in the NVIDIA Developer Forums that many people are having mixed problems with 21.10.  Most include having trouble with the Nvidia software 470, or later.
