Since we are essential out of gravity waves and I don't want to process gamma ray pulsars on my CPU, the GPU is where I want to do those, yesterday I deselected them. Today I was sent one anyway. That's not the way it's supposed to work.

I didn't see that on the preferences page, is it buried somewhere else, or did they forget to include it on the new site layout?

Here at Einstein, just now, the next section after the Applications section is the Other Settings sections, for which the second item reads:
Allow non-preferred apps: YES NO
If no work for selected applications are available, accept tasks from other applications?
Possibly the original poster has that setting configured not to their wishes.
