A question for you experienced computer whizes. I have a desktop and a laptop with WXP. I decided to give in to the hype about the need for Service Pack 2 to patch flaws and downloaded it into the laptop. Immediately I notice that E@H WUs which used to take maybe 10 hours are now hitting 30! SETI used to be 2 1/2 hours and now is approaching 7. What happened? Hardly any other programs are going here, just email right now and BOINC. Is this a recognized problem with Microsoft software 'upgrades'?. I don't see this as an improvement!

Windows SP2 & BOINC

SP2 installs several new "features". If you already have firewall software disable the MS firewall. I had totally disabled the the scheduled tasks and found that SP2 re-enbable it. I suggest you run the task manager and look for processes that are stealing cycles. Once you identify the theives I am sure someone on this board can tell you which you should and how to shut them down.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Thanks for the suggestion, but after further problems elsewhere on the laptop I uninstalled the entire SP2. I have enough virus control and firewall already without SP2 slowing it down. And magically, the BOINC accounts all sped up to their previous WU times!

Strange. I run SP2 on my Windows Boxes and experienced no noticiable slowdowns with it at all, and definitely not an impact like you saw.
