My next move is to shift the card to another machine running Linux and test using the amd_gpu-pro drivers...

Bugger. That was an hour or two wasted, should have read the amd gpu-pro release notes first! R9 390's are not supported by this driver.

See this thread Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Is Deprecating AMD's fglrx (Catalyst) (released this month)

Quote:

I only mention all this as somebody may know of a workaround in the absence of official AMD support for older GPU's in the new Linux drivers.

Mesa will be your only option, or 14.04 and fgrlx.

Edit: I knew I had seen a discussion about older cards see Phoronix article about older AMD GPUs and Vulkan

I don't think 14.04 and fgrlx will be worth the effort as I suspect that if it were possible to have a "Hawaii" card successfully run at x2 or above we would already know about it :-)
Mesa may be worth a try but from reading the reports in your linked thread it doesn't appear that the open source driver is flawless in its handling of Opencl and I don't want to invest time potentially flogging a dead horse!
My hopes are that AMD and the Linux community can add earlier GCN support to the gpu-pro drivers sometime in the near future. Until then the 390 may be resting on the spares shelf or propping a door open as I don't currently have a machine to run it in due to other issues!

Ebay it? These are still selling used at around RX-480 prices. Even if amdgpu does support them in the future, the x2 issue may not be resolved.

That would be giving up!
I may spend a little cash and throw together a new more modernish house for it. Under the right roof this card will still produce the 150 - 160K RAC per day it has proved it could do whilst running x1 under Windows OS and being somewhat hamstrung by the Pci-e2 slot it was in.
Besides, if all else fails its a good looking card and would make a great table ornament when not in use propping doors open!!!!!

It could be an upgrade for some gamer not willing to spend the money for a brand new card, don't give up on the selling it just yet to use it as a coffee table ornament!!
