In the UK I would give you exactly the opposite advice. Your land line number can be easily traced to your home address, mobile phones cannot be.

Cold calling marketing calls rarely get sent to mobiles. If I order anything on-line they only get my mobile number, else I don't buy. The only people that get my home number are family and close friends, and we are ex directory anyway.

In the case of a compromised account, you simply get a new sim card for your mobile phone with a different number, and a top up feature, no address needed. Much easier than changing you landline. Apart from ex directory we also have a paid for call barring feature enabled, anyone that gets through once that I don't want to, gets their number barred in future. You only get to talk to me if I want you to.

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Oh they did know, because they were told just minutes beforehand, when he needed a question repeated and apologised to them for being it :( I did one of my darker glances around the planet that day.

Yes

I do not have any scheduled

I do not have any scheduled payments going out of my checking account. If I want to make a payment, I go on the credit union web site and set up a one-time payment. The payee info is stored so I can do it again anytime.

My car insurance makes a debit from my account ten times per year (the insurance company is affiliated with the educator's union, so it understands many of us aren't paid in the summer), but that's the only one and only because it saves me $5/month.

Yesterday I tried to have Quicken download my accounts and the credit card I use most of the time failed to connect. I went on the bank's (different from my credit union) web site and discovered the card has a new number. I need to call and ask them why. I've only had it a few months and it doesn't expire for a couple more years, and I'm not aware of a security problem with it recently. They have my cell number and sometimes text me to verify transactions.

I no longer have a landline phone. My cell is now the same number that was issued to my parents for their phone in the early 1960s (same 7-digit, the area code changed twice over the years). My phone has built-in auto-reject, although that can result in spammers still leaving me voice mail.

That mention of it probably went in one ear and out the other without registering any meaning for the rest of the conversation.

DownUnda they are Direct

DownUnda they are Direct Debits either way, constant amount or not. Anyway it is an example of assumed knowledge in some domain eg.

Bank : I'm thinking of a number. What is it ?

Customer : Seven.

Bank : Wrong.

.... a game anyone can play ( .... cue Don Rumsfeld ). Also ( Joke du Jour ) :

Doctor : I've made an appointment for you to see a psycho-therapist.

Patient : Oh. Can't I see a normal one ?

... boom boom ...

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) So I've had this brief engagement with Marine Traffic mob to track the SpaceX ships. I paid them for the month of May to see if it is worthwhile. It isn't so I haven't renewed as of late May. Paradoxically I have since received via email ( in order ):

- a receipt of my termination request.

- confirmation of termination, as requested.

- a note that payment wasn't received by a due date, and what a naughty lad I was for that. They will terminate my account !

- an account termination notice. Because I didn't pay.

- several queries as to why I am not fully using my current account.

- several notifications of current ship movements as specified under the prior account ( that aren't allegedly available if one doesn't have an account ).

- and today they have invited me to upgrade my account to one with more features !

It didn't initially occur to me, but based upon this I now worry as to whether their ship location data was worth garnering .... maybe they were going forwards when indeed they were going backwards, perhaps they were underwater instead of floating. :-)

( edit ) Now that I come to think of it, my best strategy is to lay low .... and enjoy the non-service !

I have made this letter longer than usual because I lack the time to make it shorter ...

... and my other CPU is a Ryzen 5950X :-) Blaise Pascal

Oh our womenfolk do that!

He - Why are you upset?

She - If you don't know I'm not certainly not telling you!

**Doctors consulting room**

Mother and daughter present

Doctor - Now then Mrs Smith, the test results confirm that your daughter is definitely 3 months pregnant.

Mother - But she can't be, she's only 16 and a virgin!!

Doctor goes over to the window, opens the curtains and looks out.

Mother - What are you doing?

Doctor - Well, the last time this happened there was a bright star in the sky, I sure as hell don't want to miss it this time!

Boom boom
