If you want evidence of die

If you want evidence of die hard sports fans you need look no further than Pittsburgh in America. I was there in 2011, and the whole town is dedicated to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and every single shop sells souvenirs and memorabilia. Their Heinz Field stadium is nothing less than a shrine. And you thought that Heinz 57 baked beans were quintessentially British? Think again!!

Waiting for Godot & salvation :-)

Actually I think MOST of us,

Actually I think MOST of us, in the US, live in cities that haven't seen a championship in a while! I live just South of Washington, DC and we too are 'overdue'. But that's what makes us 'fans' and not just 'athletic supporters', we support our teams even thru the lean years, bu then celebrate heartily when we win!! CONGRATULATIONS CLEVELAND and Kathryn, for winning the NBA Championship!!!

You must have been there in football season. In baseball season, it would all be about the Pirates. If their hockey team is doing well, it would be all about the Penguins. etc., etc.

Also, you can be sure that Heinz paid a large pile of cash to have their name on that field. Almost every major league sports facility (and many minor league ones) has a corporate name attached to it. (The notable exception to this is the Chicago Cubs' Wrigley Field. For several decades, the team was owned by William K. Wrigley, of Wrigley's Gum. Subsequent team owners Tribune Corp. and the Ricketts family have known that any attempt to change the name of their stadium would be met with a massive fan revolt. Wrigley's does not pay anything to keep their name on it.) (Come to think of it, the Bears don't own Soldier Field, they rent it from the Chicago Park District, so it has no sponsor either.)

For years, the San Francisco Giants played at Candlestick Park. Then they got a corporate sponsor and it became [I forget who] Park at Candlestick Point. (Then they built a new stadium and I think the sponsor name went with it.) In Phoenix, the Diamondbacks play at the BOB -- Bank One Ballpark. The Houston Astros used to play at Enron Field. Then Enron got caught in a major scandal and went bankrupt, thus quit paying the sponsorship fee and the name was removed. For a short while, it was Astros Field, but then a new sponsor stepped up and now it's Minute Maid Park.

David, you forgot Doger

David, you forgot Doger Stadium. One of the very few owned by the team. The Rams once they get it built will also own the stadium.

@David, How can you NOT

@David,

How can you NOT remember that Candlestick was renamed Pac Bell Park when Pac Bell/SBC bought the stadium rights???... When they moved to the new stadium, that became AT&T; because AT&T bought out SBC/Pac Bell...

I'm NOT even a sports fan, and I know this! :-O

If you look at the date on the photograph it was 28th October. Also on the gate there is the Panthers, the Athletics team of the University of Pittsburgh.

@Chris Oh I do know, don't

@Chris Oh I do know, don't worry :) and my pusscats aren't allowed out at this time of year because of all the baby birds we have crashing about the garden. Anyway, they're crimson waxcaps apparently, which then developed a little fungus growth on their heads. Sadly that does mean my house is nowhere near as protected as Mike's picture made me believe :/

Every time that AnnieT talks about basements I keep thinking of this beer advert. I have absolutely no idea why .....
