I've also noticed a problem with the fan as it keeps spinning up from time to time for no apparent reason. It doesn't show in GPU-Z either. Guess it's driver related (happens in games, too).

The Reddit Nvidia forum has a great deal of 1080 material right now. One moderately active topic is one on annoying fan speed changes. Some people posting there claim that setting a fan curve in one or another of the usual suspect monitoring/control programs fixed them up. I'm not sure which reports there to trust, but it appears that at least some of what they are discussing resembles the issue you have reported.

There is a thread on Nvidia's own forums about the annoying fan speed variation issue. I think this is encouraging as the way the thread was created makes clear someone at Nvidia has heard multiple complaints on this, and the Nvidia guy asserts he has been able to make it happen and is seeking resolution.

Polaris 10 leaked spec

AMD are announcing in a few hours, so we may be spoilt for choice very soon.

I wonder how their support in Linux world will be with their Polaris cards?

Also the article mentioned "NVIDIA has a more budget oriented GeForce 10 series graphics card that may hit the market soon enough". Any info on this card series?

Any specifics are not well-sourced. There is plenty of general indication that Nvidia is likely to introduce cards below the 1070 in price and performance, most if not all of them coming from smaller chips than the GP104 which is currently used by both 1070 and 1080. Educated guesses suggest we can expect something like a new entrant every three months or so.

In the other direction, there is actually a little more substance of guesswork, as I believe Nvidia released details on the GP100 chip underlying the planned data center offering rather before the 1080/1070 announcements.

What seems less clear is what Nvidia will do to replace the 750/750Ti cards. The lack of rumors suggests that such a product may come next year and not this.

So both Nvidia and AMD are essentially selling their new offerings against the 970 and 980. One might predict that the price of used 970/980/980 Ti/Titan X cards is likely to notch down a good bit over the next three months. If you don't pay for your own power, and don't have a guilty conscience, that might be a very cheap way to build big boxes for a while.

The most amusing point in the leak is that it cites the use of a single 8-pin power connector on the new AMD product as evidence that it burns less power than the GTX 1080 (for which the reference card design uses a single 8-pin power connector).

If speculation mostly based

If speculation mostly based on a handful of apparently confirmed part numbers, plus reasoning from past history and marketplace rumors interests you here is an article which spells out (likely correct) part numbers in the Pascal family, and guesses how they might be positioned. It does not have much to say about likely sequence.

As a former IC design engineer, I imagine that introduction sequence may partly depend on how many tries it takes to get a particular chip working well enough to sell.

The AMDGPU beta drivers just released definitely support Polaris10 and Polaris11 (just had a peek in the firmware deb - just released) which covers ubuntu 16.04 and steamos.

By the way, for anyone still

By the way, for anyone still considering a 1080 or 1070, (even if these E@H numbers hold, the 1080 is a fantastic gaming card), I recommend using nowinstock.net for price alerts. Text messages supposedly come in faster than emails, which until today tended to arrive after the items had sold out.

I had a few alerts today and could have purchased on Amazon or Newegg, though cards eventually sold out again. Supply is beginning to meet demand.

I'll be buying and posting results. Fingers crossed, I can even get it to work in my Mac Pro 2,1.

Excellent. With luck you and I can cross-compare between my prospective 1070 and your 480 for legitimate comparison on Einstein work.

I've got about three slots to fill. May the best card win. While my recent experience has been Nvidia, I have multiple grudges against them, and no hesitation to using AMD if the specific product is better for this purpose.

Poppageek's post describes it as having 150 watt "average power". I hope that is a mis-speak for TDP and that in Einstein use it will be lower.

As thread originator, if I

As thread originator, if I pat my stomach and rub my head, I can change the title. So I'll try to add the AMD Polaris, of which the 480 is the first instance.

{edit: it worked. The key steps are:
1. make a new post to the thread, using the "post to thread button", not either of "quote" or "reply" buttons provided on individual posts"
2. within the one-hour window allowed for post edits, edit your own new post--you'll see the original title in a box, changes you make inside that box will alter the thread title when you post your edited post.
}

And there they are! Those OC'd 980tis are the fastest I could find. A 1080 in its current state would have to get a fairly substantial OC to match.
